Celebrity “wedding disasters” are not all the same story. Some weddings ran into public, legal or family complications; other unions became notorious because they ended quickly. The documented examples below separate those categories—and distinguish an annulment from a divorce—rather than treating a later breakup as proof that a couple should never have married.
When the wedding itself became the story
These cases concern ceremony planning, public controversy or reported family conflict. They do not, by themselves, establish that the marriages later failed.
Charles and Camilla: a royal ceremony caught in a succession of complications
The 2005 wedding of Charles and Camilla faced a cluster of logistical and public-relations problems. The ceremony was moved after Windsor Castle’s licensing issue; there was debate over whether a civil ceremony was lawful, and the Queen chose not to attend it. Objections and public-relations concerns added to the scrutiny. The date was also postponed after Pope John Paul II’s funeral was scheduled for the same day. Brooklyn Peltz Beckham and Nicola Peltz: family tensions recounted later
Vanity Fair’s 2026 feature revisits reported tensions surrounding the couple’s 2022 wedding, including accounts involving the first dance and Peltz’s reaction. Those details are reported accounts and participant comments, not all independently established facts. The story belongs in a list of wedding controversies because of the public family narrative around the event—not because a later marital outcome proves a wedding was a mistake. Legal uncertainty and marriages ended without divorce
An annulment is a legal outcome distinct from divorce. The exact rules and consequences depend on jurisdiction, so a reported annulment should not be casually described as a divorce or as a ceremony that simply “did not count.”
Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall: a ceremony with legal complications
Jagger and Hall held a Hindu ceremony in 1990. TIME’s contemporary report says it “lacked the proper paperwork” and notes later legal complications. That short description should not be inflated into a definitive legal ruling without a reliable legal source. TIME’s 2004 report on celebrity annulments.

Britney Spears and Jason Alexander: a Las Vegas marriage annulled
Spears and childhood acquaintance Jason Alexander married in Las Vegas in 2004; the marriage was annulled. TIME included them in its January 19, 2004 report on celebrity annulments. Because the cited report does not establish an exact elapsed duration with court documentation, it is safer to call it a brief marriage rather than assign a precise number of hours. Aaliyah and R. Kelly: a marriage involving a minor
TIME reported that singer Aaliyah was 15 when she married R. Kelly and that her parents put an end to the marriage. This case should be discussed soberly: it concerns a minor and serious sexual-abuse allegations, not a comic celebrity-marriage anecdote. Brief marriages and contested explanations
Short duration alone does not explain why a marriage became a public controversy. In these cases, the public story also involved a legal filing, statements from participants or a later account of the breakup. Motives and accusations need attribution.
Renee Zellweger and Kenny Chesney: annulment and competing descriptions
Zellweger filed for an annulment in 2005, citing “fraud,” according to Us Weekly. The couple’s joint statement described a “miscommunication of the objective of their marriage.” Chesney later said, “I panicked.” These are different attributed descriptions of the split, not a single agreed explanation. Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries: a divorce after 72 days
Kardashian filed for divorce after 72 days of marriage, Us Weekly reports. Humphries later dropped an annulment request that cited fraud, and the divorce was finalized in 2013. The filing, the abandoned annulment request and the final divorce are separate procedural events; the fraud claim was an allegation, not an established finding in this account. Us Weekly’s account.
Ali Landry and Mario Lopez: a two-week marriage and an admitted infidelity
AOL’s 2026 roundup says Landry recalled ending the marriage after two weeks amid infidelity rumors, and quotes Lopez later admitting that he cheated. The distinction matters: the infidelity rumors are not proof on their own, while Lopez’s reported admission is a separate, attributed statement. AOL’s roundup of annulled celebrity marriages.

What these stories do—and do not—show
The examples mix ceremony trouble, legal complications and relationship breakdown. They are not a representative sample of celebrity marriages, and their variety makes a single “disaster” label imprecise.
- Ceremony or public-relations trouble: Charles and Camilla; Brooklyn Peltz Beckham and Nicola Peltz.
- Legal uncertainty or annulment reporting: Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall; Britney Spears and Jason Alexander; Aaliyah and R. Kelly; Renee Zellweger and Kenny Chesney.
- Brief marriage followed by divorce or a reported breakup: Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries; Ali Landry and Mario Lopez.
A 2012 Marriage Foundation report estimated a 40% ten-year divorce rate for its selected celebrity sample, compared with 20% for typical UK couples. The comparison reflects that report’s particular sample, fame threshold and UK divorce data commissioned from the Office for National Statistics; it is not a current global rate or proof that celebrity marriages generally fail more often.
