This list weighs the intensity of each character’s obsessive attachment, its effect on the plot, the character’s distinctiveness and development, and how well the story uses its tone, from horror to comedy. Yandere is a fictional trope, not a clinical diagnosis, and the behavior it describes can be frightening and harmful.
What makes a character a yandere?
A 2025 conference paper defines a yandere as a fictional character with “an intense and obsessive love for someone.” That attachment may lead to extreme behavior, including violence against people seen as threats. The label is best understood as a storytelling trope, not a diagnosis or an endorsement of possessiveness.
The ranking below draws on recurring examples in published anime lists and academic discussion, then considers how clearly each character fits the trope and what the story does with that fit. Some entries are debatable, especially where violence or fixation is not rooted in romantic obsession.
The 15 best yandere characters in anime
1. Yuno Gasai — Future Diary / Mirai Nikki
Yuno is a flagship yandere: her intense devotion to Yukiteru shapes the story, while her willingness to use violence in his defense makes that devotion dangerous. The contrast between affection and threat gives the character a central role in the series’ suspense. A 2025 paper specifically names Yuno among well-known examples of the archetype.

2. Satou Matsuzaka — Happy Sugar Life
Satou’s controlled, chilling attachment to Shio lies at the heart of the series’ psychological-horror premise. Rather than treating obsession as a quirky romantic exaggeration, the story makes it a source of dread and moral unease. Satou is also identified as a prominent example in the 2025 paper.
3. Kotonoha Katsura — School Days
Kotonoha is closely associated with the escalating romantic conflict and disturbing consequences of School Days. Her place on yandere lists reflects how the series turns a relationship drama toward unsettling extremes. The 2025 paper also names her among recognizable examples of the trope.
4. Akane Hiyama — Love Tyrant
Akane represents the heightened, comic side of the archetype. Her possessiveness and violent jealousy are exaggerated for a story that leans into absurdity, making her a useful contrast to the horror-driven characters above.

5. Esdeath — Akame ga Kill!
Esdeath is a powerful antagonist whose obsessive romantic interest adds another dimension to her already dark characterization. The contrast between her authority and her fixation makes the attachment distinctive, even as the character’s larger role extends well beyond romance.

6. Haruna Niekawa — Durarara!!
Haruna brings a supernatural and psychologically dark variation to the list. Her obsession is shaped by Saika, the blade at the center of this aspect of her story, so her fit is less a straightforward romance than a disturbing entanglement between fixation and supernatural influence.
7. Yukako Yamagishi — JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable
Yukako’s possessiveness is expressed through coercive attempts to win affection. That makes her an unsettling example of a character whose devotion crosses the line into control, while the series’ heightened style gives the storyline its own distinctive flavor.

8. Misa Amane — Death Note
Misa’s extreme loyalty to Light Yagami makes her a familiar candidate for yandere lists. The imbalance in their relationship is central to why the example is uncomfortable: intense devotion does not mean the affection is returned on equal terms.
9. Rena Ryuuguu — Higurashi: When They Cry
Rena is a horror-oriented and debated inclusion. The series’ fear, paranoia, and violence are not automatically evidence of romantic obsession, so her fit is less clear than that of characters whose fixation directly drives their behavior toward a loved one. She is best approached as a boundary case rather than a textbook example.
10. Shion Sonozaki — Higurashi: When They Cry
Shion’s attachment to Satoshi is linked to escalating harm in one published ranking’s account of the character. That connection gives her a clearer place in a romance-centered reading of the trope than Rena, while the horror context still makes the series’ broader violence an important distinction.

11. Kaede Fuyou — Shuffle!
Kaede is an early, frequently cited example in discussions of the anime yandere archetype. Her reputation gives the list historical breadth beyond the more recent or globally prominent titles, though published rankings do not agree on a definitive canon of examples.
12. Ryoko Asakura — The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Ryoko is a particularly debatable entry. Her inclusion in one ranking rests on homicidal behavior, while that same account notes she is not romantically obsessed. Under a strict definition centered on obsessive love, she is a weak fit; she belongs here only as an example of how loosely the label is sometimes applied.
13. Ayase Aragaki — Oreimo
Ayase is a comedic or boundary-case selection, associated with obsessive attachment to Kirino and hostility toward Kirino’s brother. The comic framing complicates comparison with characters whose fixation drives psychological horror, but her possessiveness makes her relevant to the broader, less strict use of the label.

14. Nina Einstein — Code Geass
Nina’s fixation is directed toward Euphemia, and one published ranking connects it to extreme actions. This is a boundary case because the obsession need not be romantic in the account that includes her. Readers using a romance-centered definition may reasonably leave her off a stricter list.
15. Kurumi Tokisaki — Date A Live
Kurumi is a recognizable dark and dangerous character who appears on published yandere lists. Her inclusion depends on the criteria being used, rather than on universal agreement that she is a clear-cut example; she earns a place here as a character whose menace and fixation make the classification worth considering.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why yandere rankings disagree
Published lists differ in both their selections and their order. Some use “yandere” broadly for dangerous fixation, while a stricter reading expects the character’s extreme behavior to grow from obsessive love. That distinction matters most for Ryoko Asakura and Nina Einstein, and also invites disagreement over Rena Ryuuguu.
The ranking’s strongest fits are characters whose obsessive attachment is unmistakable and consequential, such as Yuno, Satou, and Kotonoha. Other choices broaden the discussion by showing how the label changes across horror, thriller, drama, and comedy. A reader who wants a strict romance-centered shortlist can treat the boundary cases as optional rather than as settled members of the category.

What a small survey says—and does not say
A 2025 Undergraduate Conference on Language, Literature, and Culture paper reports that 73.3% of its 15 Japanese respondents disliked yandere characters. That is a result from a very small survey, not representative evidence about Japanese audiences overall. It suggests only that the trope can provoke a strong negative reaction among those respondents; it cannot establish a broader national preference.
