The phrase “15 celebs that started out as groupies” comes from a 2017 TheRichest listicle by Macee Binns—not from a settled biographical category. Its examples mix music-scene involvement with fandom, relationships, and later celebrity connections. The article names 14 people in the available copy, not 15, and its descriptions alone do not establish that they all began their careers as groupies.
What “groupie” means in this list
Binns’s article uses “groupie” broadly for people who became close to musicians, traveled with them, worked with them, or became associated with their record labels. Those are different experiences, and none automatically proves that a person began a career as a groupie. The label is the listicle’s framing, not an objective classification that should be applied to everyone it names.

That distinction matters because the article brings together people with very different public identities: musicians, models, actors, memoirists, and people known through celebrity relationships. Dating a musician, being a fan, or meeting a future spouse through an entertainment-industry connection is not, on its own, evidence of a groupie career.
Who the 2017 article names
The available copy names Pamela Des Barres, Roxana Shirazi, Bebe Buell, Nancy Spungen, Courtney Love, Sharon Osbourne, Carmen Electra, Pamela Anderson, Jerry Hall, Winona Ryder, Nicole Richie, Amber Rose, Kevin Federline, and Jackie Sandler. Although the headline promises 15 people, this copy identifies 14.

The list should be read as a collection of people the publisher associated with the term, not as proof that each person “started out” in that role. In particular, the article’s entries for Sharon Osbourne and Jackie Sandler describe connections through music or film-industry circles; those descriptions do not by themselves demonstrate that either was a groupie. The same caution applies to its broader treatment of romantic relationships and celebrity associations.
Two first-person memoirs the article points to
Pamela Des Barres
The list identifies Des Barres as a member of the GTOs and names her memoir, I’m with the Band: Confessions of a Groupie. It offers a route into her own account of rock-scene experience. As with any memoir, it is the author’s perspective; its presence in the list does not independently confirm every claim made there.

Roxana Shirazi
The article also names Shirazi’s memoir, The Last Living Sl*t. It is another first-person reading lead, not outside verification of the listicle’s claims. The available information does not establish current editions or availability for either book.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to read the list responsibly
- Attribute the “groupie” label to Binns’s 2017 article rather than presenting it as a verified biographical fact.
- Keep distinct experiences distinct: music-scene work, fandom, romantic association, and a later public career are not interchangeable.
- Treat quotations and relationship claims reproduced by the listicle as claims attributed by that article; they were not independently confirmed against original interviews or authoritative biographies in the available material.
- Use the named memoirs as their authors’ accounts, not as neutral or external corroboration.
The result is less a reliable ranking of people who all began in one role than a snapshot of how celebrity coverage has used “groupie” as a catch-all label. Its headline makes a stronger claim than the evidence in the available copy supports.
