There is no official scoreboard for anime’s best trios, so this ranking weighs sustained chemistry, complementary roles, character development and emotional or comedic impact. The strongest groups are not necessarily the most powerful: rivalry, loyalty, comic timing and changing relationships can matter just as much as teamwork. The order is an editorial judgment, and fans may reasonably rank these groups differently.

How this ranking works

Each trio is judged by how convincingly its three members work together, whether each brings a distinct quality, how their relationships evolve, and how much their shared scenes contribute to the series. This gives comedy ensembles, travel companions and fractured friendships room alongside action teams. The list is not a popularity poll: for example, the official Naruto character vote held from December 17, 2022, to January 31, 2023 (JST) received approximately 4.6 million votes, but it ranked individual characters, not trios (Naruto Official Site).

The 15 best anime trios

1. Gintoki, Shinpachi and Kagura — Gintama

The Yorozuya’s appeal comes from the way three very different personalities turn ordinary jobs into comic disasters, then make those same relationships matter when the story turns serious. Gintoki’s irreverence, Shinpachi’s exasperated straight-man energy and Kagura’s uninhibited force create a durable comic rhythm with a found-family core. Their range is the deciding advantage: the trio can be ridiculous without becoming emotionally weightless. The official Gintama portal describes a series that brings together comedy, action, human feeling and bonds; its original television run concluded in 2018 after 367 episodes.

2. Luffy, Zoro and Sanji — One Piece

This trio works because loyalty and friction coexist. Luffy supplies the shared direction, while Zoro and Sanji bring formidable but contrasting temperaments—and a rivalry that keeps their scenes lively. Their value is not simply that they are powerful fighters; their differences help define the crew’s energy and support Luffy’s ambition. ComicBook.com calls them the “Monster Trio,” but that is an editorial label rather than an official universal ranking or proof of an objective top three (ComicBook.com).

3. Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura — Team 7, Naruto

Team 7 earns its place through change as much as through its early team dynamic. Naruto and Sasuke’s rivalry becomes a profound source of conflict, while Sakura’s relationships with both help give the group its emotional shape. They do not remain a stable unit throughout the story; separation and later alliance make their bond more complicated than a conventional, always-together squad. The official Naruto episode synopsis identifies Team 7 by name (Naruto Official Site); the ranking here reflects the trio’s story and relationship arc, not an official assessment.

4. Ash, Misty and Brock — Pokémon

As travel companions, Ash, Misty and Brock offer an instantly legible mix of ambition, impatience and practical care. Their shared journey gives the trio a steady foundation: changing destinations and challenges create room for each personality to play off the others. They rank highly for recognizability and for the classic adventure-team feel, rather than for a single defining conflict. The official Pokémon movie page provides franchise adventure context, though it is not a complete history of this particular trio.

5. Eren, Mikasa and Armin — Attack on Titan

This childhood-friend trio stands out for emotional stakes, not light banter. Their shared history anchors the story even as their paths and beliefs diverge. That tension makes the group compelling: the bond remains important precisely because it does not guarantee agreement or a simple reunion. Their placement recognizes how a trio can shape a story through separation and conflict as much as through time spent working together.

6. Yuji, Megumi and Nobara — Jujutsu Kaisen

Yuji, Megumi and Nobara make an effective team because they bring distinct temperaments and approaches to their shared work. Their scenes benefit from the contrast between Yuji’s openhearted drive, Megumi’s more reserved judgment and Nobara’s forceful self-assurance. The trio’s appeal lies in that combination of friendship and friction, rather than a claim that they are always together or officially designated as the series’ best group. The official character page lists Yuji and Megumi among the characters; this placement is an editorial assessment.

7. Mugen, Jin and Fuu — Samurai Champloo

Fuu’s journey brings together Mugen and Jin, two skilled but sharply opposed swordsmen. The clash between Mugen’s impulsiveness and Jin’s discipline gives the traveling group an immediate source of tension, while Fuu provides the purpose that keeps the mismatched companions moving in the same direction. Their appeal is built around contrast and an uneasy shared journey, not a conventional tight-knit team.

8. Yusuke, Kuwabara and Kurama — Yu Yu Hakusho

Yusuke, Kuwabara and Kurama balance attitude, loyalty and composure in a way that makes their group feel varied without losing its center. Yusuke and Kuwabara’s rivalry supplies noise and humor; Kurama adds a more controlled perspective. Their different styles give the trio room to be more than three versions of the same action hero.

  • Available in 2 different versions across all markets, providing unique assortments for collectors and fans alike.

9. Aladdin, Alibaba and Morgiana — Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic

Aladdin, Alibaba and Morgiana form a strong adventure trio because their journeys and personalities give the group different kinds of momentum. Aladdin brings curiosity and warmth, Alibaba contributes ambition and uncertainty, and Morgiana’s strength and independence change the balance of the group. Their appeal is in watching three distinct people find common cause, not in treating them as interchangeable companions.

10. Gon, Killua and Leorio — Hunter x Hunter

Gon, Killua and Leorio are memorable for the way friendship crosses differences in age, temperament and purpose. Gon and Killua’s close bond gives the group a youthful center, while Leorio’s more adult concerns broaden its emotional register. Their shared scenes can be funny and affectionate, but the trio’s changing circumstances mean they are not a permanent, continuously assembled team.

11. Vash, Meryl and Milly — Trigun

Vash, Meryl and Milly make a memorable traveling combination through the contrast between Vash’s eccentricity and the two insurance agents’ very different responses to him. Meryl’s skepticism and Milly’s sunny openness provide distinct comic counterpoints, while the group’s encounters with danger give the companionship more weight than a simple gag setup.

12. Haruhi, Tamaki and Kyoya — Ouran High School Host Club

Haruhi, Tamaki and Kyoya offer a compact version of the series’ social comedy: Haruhi’s grounded perspective disrupts Tamaki’s theatrical impulses, while Kyoya’s strategic instincts keep the Host Club’s schemes moving. Their chemistry comes from competing interpretations of the same situation, with each character supplying a different kind of comic energy.

13. Bakugo, Midoriya and Todoroki — My Hero Academia

Bakugo, Midoriya and Todoroki are compelling together because rivalry, respect and personal growth intersect among three students with very different temperaments. Midoriya’s earnestness, Bakugo’s intensity and Todoroki’s reserve make their interactions more interesting than a simple collection of strong abilities. They rank lower because their trio identity is less consistently central than the groups above.

14. Luffy, Zoro and Nami — One Piece

This alternate One Piece grouping has an appealing balance: Luffy’s instinctive optimism, Zoro’s blunt steadiness and Nami’s practical judgment create a recognizable early-crew dynamic. It ranks below the Luffy–Zoro–Sanji combination because the latter’s rivalry and complementary roles make a more distinctive three-way dynamic for this list. Both are valid ways to think about the series’ core relationships.

15. Light, L and Misa — Death Note

Light, L and Misa are not a conventional friendship or cooperative team, which is precisely what makes this an unusual pick. Their relationships are shaped by competing aims, suspicion and unequal knowledge. The trio’s significance comes from the way their interactions intensify the series’ psychological tension, rather than from dependable teamwork. It closes the ranking as a reminder that a memorable trio can be built around conflict as well as affection.

Why “best” depends on what you value

A comedy-focused viewer may put the Yorozuya first; someone drawn to long-running adventure may favor the One Piece crew, while viewers interested in relationships under pressure may choose Team 7 or the Attack on Titan friends. A 2026 ComicBook.com list highlights five trios, including several featured here, but it is an editorial selection—not evidence of audience-wide agreement or a measured ranking (ComicBook.com). A 2024 Tech Edvocate list offers a larger candidate pool and names criteria such as synergy, character development and impact, but its entries include groupings that are not straightforward anime trios; it is best treated as a source of suggestions, not a definitive roster (The Tech Edvocate).
