If what you liked about Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation was watching a life unfold—not just seeing a hero arrive in another world—start with The Beginning After the End, The Faraway Paladin, or Ascendance of a Bookworm. For a harsher isekai, try Re:Zero; for reflective fantasy travel, try Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End. None is a complete substitute: the best match depends on whether you want a second-life premise, long-term character growth, fantasy-world exploration, close relationships, or a much darker story.
What makes an anime feel like Mushoku Tensei?
The official introduction to Mushoku Tensei frames it as a second chance at life: after dying, a shut-in is reborn as Rudeus in a world of swords and magic and resolves to live this life seriously. The official episode index follows him across childhood, learning, travel, school, relationships, family, and further adventures. That long view of a person changing over time is a more useful comparison than the isekai label alone.
The recommendations below are grouped by the kind of resemblance they offer. The first four have official synopsis support for the premise comparisons described here. The rest are shorter, qualified picks: treat them as suggestions to explore, not as claims that they reproduce Rudeus’s life arc.
Closest matches for a second life and formative growth
The Beginning After the End
This is the closest premise match in the group: a former king is reborn as an infant in a magical world, where family and companionship shape his new life. That gives it a second-life and upbringing connection to Mushoku Tensei. The difference matters, though: its protagonist begins from the position of a king, not someone trying to rebuild himself after a failed former life.

The Faraway Paladin
Choose this for a formative upbringing shaped by teachers and a developing sense of purpose. The official synopsis describes Will being raised by three undead mentors before setting out on the path to become a paladin. Its appeal is the combination of growing up in a fantasy world and moving toward a vocation, rather than a direct match for Rudeus’s circumstances.
Ascendance of a Bookworm
A qualified pick if you want a second-life story with attention to the everyday structures of a fantasy society. It may suit viewers who find the ordinary details of building a place in a new world as interesting as adventure itself. It is not a verified one-to-one match for Mushoku Tensei’s life-stage progression.
That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime
Consider this if reincarnation and the growth of a fantasy world are more important to you than a close match in tone or personal history. It is a broader, looser recommendation: the appeal here is the second-life and world-expansion angle, not a promise of the same coming-of-age story.

For unfamiliar worlds, survival, and pressure
Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World
Re:Zero is a useful match for the shock of being thrown into an unfamiliar fantasy world and facing intense hardship. Its official synopsis supports that premise comparison. It is not the same kind of slow childhood-to-adulthood progression as Mushoku Tensei, so choose it for a more crisis-driven experience rather than an equivalent life-spanning arc.
Grimgar: Ashes and Illusions
A cautious suggestion for viewers interested in vulnerable newcomers and the costs of getting by in a fantasy setting. It belongs on the list as a survival-focused tonal alternative, not as a verified match for Mushoku Tensei’s premise or structure.
The Rising of the Shield Hero
This is a looser fit for viewers drawn to an outsider navigating an unfamiliar fantasy world. Expect a different emphasis and tone from Rudeus’s extended personal development; the useful overlap is the outsider perspective, not an identical second-life story.

Made in Abyss
Only choose this if you want a fantasy expedition with a substantially darker and more disturbing register. It is included as a contrast, not because it feels interchangeable with Mushoku Tensei. Check an authoritative content guide before watching if you are sensitive to disturbing material.
For fantasy travel, discovery, or world systems
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End
Frieren is a thematic rather than reincarnation match. Its official story begins after the Demon King has been defeated and follows the long-lived mage on a later journey. That makes it a strong suggestion if you want reflective fantasy travel and emotional perspective, but not if the defining feature you want is a protagonist growing up from childhood.
Log Horizon
Try this if the design and social rules of a fantasy world interest you more than a close personal-life parallel to Rudeus. It is a qualified recommendation for viewers who want to focus on how a world works, rather than on the same kind of family-and-life-stage arc.
The Twelve Kingdoms
A possibility for viewers seeking prolonged character growth in a richly structured fantasy setting. It is a broader thematic suggestion, not a reincarnation-equivalent recommendation; check the official anime listing for its premise and localized title details.
DanMachi (Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?)
Consider it if you want fantasy adventure and relationships alongside a developing protagonist. The overlap is in the broad adventure-and-growth appeal, not in an established match for Mushoku Tensei’s second-life setup.

Spice and Wolf
This is a looser recommendation for the journey-and-partnership angle. It is not an isekai equivalent; choose it when a fantasy setting and relationship-centered travel matter more than reincarnation or a childhood-to-adulthood arc.

The Ancient Magus’ Bride
A qualified pick for viewers drawn to intimate character change and magical atmosphere. Its place here is thematic: do not expect the same structure or tone as Mushoku Tensei.
Ranking of Kings
Try this for a fantasy coming-of-age story with an emphasis on empathy. It is not an isekai match; the recommendation is about character growth and fantasy storytelling rather than a shared premise.
Which one should you watch next?
- For the closest second-life premise: The Beginning After the End.
- For mentors and a formative fantasy upbringing: The Faraway Paladin.
- For an unfamiliar world and severe hardship: Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World.
- For reflective fantasy travel: Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End.
- For world systems or social structures: Log Horizon or Ascendance of a Bookworm.
- For a much darker expedition: Made in Abyss, with the content-sensitivity note above in mind.
These are comparisons of premise and viewing appeal, not claims that the series are interchangeable. The official Mushoku Tensei site presents Rudeus’s resolve to live seriously in his second life, while its episode index shows how the story develops across life stages. Official synopsis pages for Re:Zero, The Faraway Paladin, Frieren, and The Beginning After the End support the specific premise comparisons made above.
