There is no definitive all-time order for anime antiheroes, but these 15 characters stand out for the way their compromised methods, understandable motives, consequential choices and character development shape their stories. This is an editorial ranking, not a poll. Here, an antihero is a central character who lacks conventional heroic virtues or pursues comprehensible ends through morally troubling means—and whom the story still invites us to understand, if not approve.

What makes an anime character an antihero?

“Antihero” is a flexible critical label, not an official character category. A flawed hero may still fit; a villain who is simply cruel or whose motives and choices the story does not ask us to understand may not. The distinction is not absolute: a protagonist can cross toward villainy as a story unfolds.

This ranking weighs the same five questions for every entry: How morally compromised are the character’s methods? Can we understand the motive without endorsing it? Do their choices have consequences? Do they change or resist easy judgment? And is that tension central to their story and appeal? The order reflects those editorial judgments, not a measured consensus. Fans may reasonably disagree, especially about characters near the boundary.

The 15 best anime antiheroes, ranked

1. Light Yagami — Death Note

Light begins with an idealistic stated aim: to use the Death Note to rid the world of criminals. The moral fracture is immediate and defining: he takes lethal power into his own hands, making himself judge and executioner. VIZ’s official series page puts the central question plainly: “When Light Yagami finds a notebook giving him power over death, will he use it for good—or evil?” His story’s pull comes from watching an intelligible ambition collide with the consequences of unchecked power. Light is a direct, unsettling example of an antihero whose pursuit of a better world cannot be separated from the harm he causes.

2. Lelouch Lamperouge — Code Geass

Lelouch’s fight against an oppressive order gives his rebellion an understandable purpose, but his willingness to manipulate people and treat them as pieces in a larger strategy keeps him outside conventional heroism. He has agency: his decisions carry consequences for others, not just for himself. What makes him compelling is the tension between the just outcome he wants and the compromised methods he accepts to pursue it.

3. Guts — Berserk

Guts is defined less by a polished heroic ideal than by survival, anger and the struggle to keep moving through a brutal world. His violence and guarded nature complicate any simple reading of him as a noble champion. Yet the story keeps his endurance and capacity for connection in view, inviting empathy without pretending that suffering automatically makes someone virtuous. He earns his place through a sustained struggle between self-protection and the possibility of caring for others.

4. Kiritsugu Emiya — Fate/Zero

Kiritsugu’s wish to save lives is understandable; his willingness to pursue that goal through ruthless calculation is the compromise at the heart of his character. He treats grim choices as tools for a larger good, forcing the audience to consider who bears the cost of that arithmetic. His antiheroism is not merely a dark aesthetic: it shapes his decisions and the story’s questions about whether a noble end can justify inhuman means.

5. Revy — Black Lagoon

Revy’s forceful, violent approach makes her a clear departure from the selfless, restrained hero. In a criminal world, she is capable and dangerous, and the story does not require viewers to mistake that competence for moral goodness. Her appeal lies in the personality and vulnerability that coexist with her brutality. Revy is a strong fit because the hard-edged methods are central to how she moves through her story, rather than an occasional lapse from an otherwise conventional heroic role.

6. Ken Kaneki — Tokyo Ghoul

Kaneki’s place on this list comes from a conflict between the person he wants to be and the violent realities that shape his life. His story makes moral compromise personal: survival and identity press against the desire to retain compassion. That tension, and the changes it forces in him, make him more than a character who is simply powerful or dark. His inclusion depends on reading antiheroism as a struggle rather than a fixed personality type.

7. Arsène Lupin III — Lupin III

Lupin is a thief, so his story begins outside conventional heroic respectability. His charm and the playful appeal of his capers make him easy to root for, even when the underlying conduct remains self-serving and criminal. He broadens the list beyond grim, tragic figures: an antihero can be light-footed and entertaining while still breaking the rules that define an ordinary hero.

8. Mugen — Samurai Champloo

Mugen’s impulsiveness, selfish streak and appetite for confrontation put him at odds with disciplined heroism. He is not admirable simply because he is charismatic; his rough choices are part of the character’s appeal and friction. The story’s interest in his companionship and development gives viewers reasons to stay with him without sanding away his abrasive qualities.

9. Ciel Phantomhive — Black Butler

Ciel’s status as a young protagonist does not make him conventionally heroic. His pursuit of justice and answers is bound up with a willingness to use morally compromised means, and his position invites questions about the line between seeking retribution and becoming consumed by it. He qualifies because the story centers that tension rather than presenting his choices as uncomplicated virtue.

10. Hei — Darker than Black

Hei’s role as an operative places him in a world of violence, secrecy and morally murky work. The gap between the person he presents and the actions his work demands gives the character an antiheroic edge. His inclusion rests on the centrality of that double life and the choices it entails, rather than on treating a mysterious or cool demeanor as sufficient evidence of moral complexity.

11. Alucard — Hellsing

Alucard is a monstrous figure deployed against other threats, a role that makes the usual hero-villain categories difficult to apply. His extraordinary capacity for violence is not a minor blemish; it is integral to his appeal and to the discomfort of watching him serve a cause that can be framed as righteous. He belongs here as an antihero whose usefulness does not erase the danger or darkness he embodies.

12. Akame — Akame ga Kill!

Akame’s cause may be understood as a fight against a corrupt order, but her work is still bound to lethal violence. The gap between a liberating aim and the act of killing gives her a place among characters whose moral choices cannot be reduced to “good side” and “bad side.” She is a borderline case: the antihero reading is strongest when attention stays on the cost and moral weight of her methods, not just the righteousness of the cause.

13. Claire Stanfield — Baccano!

Claire is a deliberately difficult fit for a conventional hero label. His confidence and capacity for violence make him memorable, but those traits do not add up to a standard moral champion. He earns a place as a more eccentric, unsettling entry: the character’s appeal rests partly on the unease of trying to decide how much admiration his audacity deserves.

14. Ika Musume — Squid Girl

Ika Musume is a lighter, more borderline inclusion than the killers and strategists above. Her initial threatening posture and plans make her an unusual would-be antagonist, while the comedy and her gradual place among humans soften that role. She shows why the label needs room for context: an antihero need not be grim, but a character’s limited and comic transgressions make this a looser fit than the ranking’s strongest examples.

15. Ai — Jigoku Shoujo

Ai’s association with vengeance places her at a moral threshold: the appeal of retribution sits alongside the harm that vengeance perpetuates. She is a more ambiguous inclusion because a character who administers punishment can read as an instrument of a story’s premise as much as an antiheroic protagonist. Her place at the bottom reflects that uncertainty, not a claim that she is less memorable.

Why rankings of anime antiheroes differ

There is no single accepted test for the label, and different lists draw the boundary differently. Some favor protagonists whose morally gray conduct remains central throughout a story; others include characters with fewer traditionally noble qualities or emphasize charisma and audience sympathy. That is why a thief, a revolutionary strategist, a survivor and a comic would-be invader can all appear in the same conversation without being equivalent cases. The useful question is not only whether a character does wrong, but how the story frames their reasons, choices and consequences.
