Royal engagement portraits span more than 150 years, from an 1862 photograph of Albert Edward and Alexandra of Denmark to official portraits of royal couples in the 21st century. The available records document five useful examples, but do not establish the exact 13-photo lineup suggested by the original title. The chronology below sticks to what the cited institutions and reporting confirm.
Royal engagement portraits, in chronological order
Each entry separates what its source confirms from details that are not established. For historical images, an archive object may differ from a formal press-office release; the distinction matters when identifying a photograph.
1862: Albert Edward and Alexandra of Denmark
A Royal Collection Trust record says Albert Edward, the future Edward VII, and Alexandra were betrothed in the gardens of the Royal Palace at Laeken in Brussels on 9 September 1862. A calendar object in the collection includes a photograph of the pair taken that day. The record identifies Princess Louise as the maker of the calendar, not as the photographer, and does not name the photographer in the cited account. Royal Collection Trust object record.
January 1923: Prince Albert and Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon
Emil Otto Hoppé made an engagement portrait of Prince Albert, Duke of York, and Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, who later became King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. The Royal Collection Trust transcript describes Hoppé’s pictorialist approach: soft focus and a circular frame created by masking parts of the negative during printing. The cited record establishes the month and year, not an exact day. Royal Collection Trust transcript.

Dorothy Wilding was called upon to take the official engagement portraits of Princess Elizabeth and Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten in July 1947. The Royal Collection Trust notes that Wilding had become the first official female royal photographer in May 1937. The source supports the month and year, but not a precise date for the portraits. Mario Testino took the official engagement portraits of the couple then known as Prince William and Kate Middleton in London in 2010, according to the National Portrait Gallery. 2017: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle
TIME reported that the official engagement photographs were made at Frogmore House and included two portraits: one of the couple seated together on steps and a black-and-white image showing an embrace. TIME’s indexed result attributes the photographs to Alexi Lubomirski, but its article was only partially available; treat that credit as less certain than the location and image descriptions. TIME’s report.
What these portraits reveal about changing royal photography
The five examples show different approaches rather than a continuous, fully documented technical history. Hoppé’s 1923 portrait offers a specific early example of pictorialist soft focus and a masked circular composition. Wilding’s 1947 work is identified as official engagement portraiture; by 2010, the National Portrait Gallery names a prominent fashion photographer, Mario Testino, and London as the setting for the Cambridge portraits.

Its exhibition material describes a broad movement from mostly monochrome photography toward colour and digital photography, while noting newer image effects that can alter photographs or create visual illusions. That exhibition provides context for royal portraiture, not a census of engagement photographs. Royal Collection Trust exhibition announcement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why this is not a complete set of 13
The documented examples above cannot authenticate the exact selection implied by “13 Royal Engagement Photos Throughout the Years.” The cited records establish five historical moments, not the identity, date, photographer, or provenance of eight additional images. Adding portraits to reach thirteen would risk presenting unsupported dates or credits as fact.
