These 13 references translate that visual history into ideas to take to a stylist, while distinguishing actual changes in length and shape from styling variations.
13 Princess Diana hair inspirations
1. Long, straight early hair
Before her signature public style, Diana wore long, pin-straight flaxen hair. This is the simplest reference if you want to explore her early look: keep the length and emphasize a smooth, straight finish. Vogue’s retrospective documents this early phase.
2. The early feathered layers
As she entered public life, Diana adopted a layered, winged shape with cropped pieces around the cheekbones and layers grazing the chin. Vogue calls it the “Lady Diana Haircut”; that is a descriptive label, not a formal technical cut name. Bring a reference image to your stylist rather than relying on the label alone. Vogue compares its youthful effect to Farrah Fawcett’s feathered hair.
3. Side-swept fringe with loose lift
A softer version of the feathered cut pairs side-swept bangs with loose volume instead of a strongly teased set. It keeps the characteristic movement while looking less structured.

4. Teased, high-volume feathering
For a more pronounced 1980s silhouette, build lift through the layered lengths and fringe. This is a styling treatment of the feathered shape, not a separate haircut; Vogue notes that Diana’s hallmark look varied in volume.
5. The 1984 grown-out, deep-parted look
In 1984, Diana let her hair grow longer, parted it deeply to one side, and smoothed it back with a comb. Vogue describes the effect as Sloane Ranger and “’40s-meets-’80s.” Treat it as a notable grown-out variation, not a permanent new cut. See Vogue’s timeline.

6. Feathered hair with a decorative floral accent
Diana sometimes paired her 1980s styling with decorative florals. The flower is an accessory, not part of the cut, and works as a reference for dressing up layered hair without changing its silhouette.
7. Feathered hair with a sparkling brooch
A sparkling brooch adds an ornamental focal point to the familiar voluminous shape. Use this as an accessory idea rather than a haircut request; the hair itself can remain softly layered or more dramatically set.

8. A tiara-ready version
Diana also wore tiaras with variations of her signature style. The tiara changes the occasion and finish, not the underlying haircut, so show your stylist how you want the hair to sit around the piece.
9. The cropped look first created for a Vogue shoot
Sam McKnight says he first worked with Diana after a 1990 Vogue shoot, where he styled her hair to look shorter. He later told her, “I’d just cut it all off and start again.” The editorial illusion preceded the actual short cut. McKnight’s account in Vogue explains the sequence.

10. Diana’s short, streamlined cut
The short style associated with McKnight became a major change from the fuller 1980s shape. Its appeal lies in the compact silhouette; it should be understood as an evolution that took time, not a single overnight switch to a permanently sleek look. Vogue’s interview with McKnight describes the transition.
11. Short hair tucked behind the ears
Vogue’s 1990s retrospective shows the short cut worn tucked behind the ears. This styling choice exposes the face and keeps the outline minimal without requiring a different cut. See the 1990s looks in Vogue.

12. Short hair with bangs, sleek or soft
The short shape could also be worn with bangs, in a sleek finish, or with a softer texture. These are distinct image references, but they are primarily styling variations on short hair rather than three historically separate cuts. Ask a stylist which fringe and finish suit your own hair and upkeep preferences; the photographs alone do not establish universal face-shape or hair-type rules. Vogue documents these variations.
13. The 1995 wet-look finish
For the 1995 CFDA Awards, where Diana was a celebrity presenter, McKnight created a wet look. This is an event-specific styling treatment—not another haircut—and shows how dramatically finish alone can change the impression of a short shape. Vogue’s account of the look.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to adapt a Diana reference for your own hair
Choose the image for its specific feature—length, layers, fringe, volume, part, finish, or accessory—rather than asking for “the Diana cut” as though it meant one precise shape. A useful salon reference is an image that resembles the result you want, paired with a clear explanation of what should change and what should stay. Diana herself described a haircut’s effect as revealing “something quite different,” in footage from the documentary Diana In Her Own Words quoted by Vogue.
Recreating the 1980s volume
For a fuller, set finish, hot rollers are one documented option. McKnight said that when recreating Diana’s 1980s volume for Emma Corrin, he used a hot roller set, backcombing, and hairspray: “Whether her hair was short, long or in between, we went big with a hot roller set, backcombing and hairspray.” This describes his later recreation, not proof that Diana used a particular current product or brand. Vogue reports McKnight’s method.
