Give familiar clothes a different feel by changing where you wear an accessory or layering it in a new way. A scarf is especially adaptable: depending on its size and shape, it can work at the waist, around the neck, over the shoulders, as a top, or on a bag. Start with pieces you already own, then choose one detail to make the focus.
Ways to style a scarf at the waist
1. Thread it through trouser belt loops
Use a scarf in place of a conventional belt to bring color and texture to trousers and a simple top. Vogue’s scarf-as-belt guide shows the waist as a way to make a familiar outfit feel more considered. A narrow scarf is easiest to thread; tie it at the front or slightly off-center.
2. Tie it over a dress
Knotted around the waist of a dress, a scarf adds definition and a contrasting detail without changing the dress itself. Choose a scarf long enough to tie comfortably, and let the knot sit where it feels secure rather than pulling the fabric tight.
3. Let one end fall longer at the hip
For an asymmetrical variation, knot a scarf at the waist and leave one end longer so it falls diagonally toward one hip. Who What Wear’s styling examples use this uneven length to make the scarf part of the outfit’s silhouette, not just a belt substitute.

Ways to wear a scarf as clothing
4. Make a large square scarf into a halter
A large square scarf can be folded and tied at the neck, with the remaining ends secured behind the lower back. This runway-inspired approach is shown in Vogue’s scarf styling guide. It requires enough fabric to cover the front and tie securely; a small or narrow scarf may not provide adequate coverage. Consider what you will wear underneath and check that the knots stay secure as you move.
5. Wear a scarf as a top beneath high-waisted trousers
Fold and tie a scarf to create a top, then pair it with high-waisted trousers. Vogue’s Fall 2026 runway scarf guide includes scarves worn as tops, including a tucked-in styling. This look depends on the scarf’s size and construction; use a secure tie and a layer underneath if you want more coverage.

Ways to style a scarf near the face, shoulders, or bag
6. Tie a small scarf as a neckerchief
Fold a small scarf into a band and knot it at the neck to give a blazer or dress a focal point near the face. A simple knot lets the print show without competing with other details. Keep the rest of the outfit relatively quiet if you want the scarf to stand out.
7. Drape it as a shawl
Lay a larger scarf over the shoulders as a light shawl, especially over a monochrome outfit. A printed or checked design introduces contrast while leaving the clothes underneath simple. A soft, drapey fabric is more comfortable for this fluid placement than a stiff one.

8. Use a printed scarf as the outfit’s print focal point
Let one printed scarf supply the pattern in an outfit built from neutral basics. Who What Wear’s scarf outfit examples pair a patterned scarf with simpler clothing, showing how one accent can make the combination feel deliberate. If the scarf is bold, avoid adding several competing prints.
9. Tie it to a bag handle or strap
Knot a scarf around a bag handle or strap for a small, low-commitment splash of pattern. Keep the knot clear of clasps and moving parts, and do not rely on a decorative scarf as a replacement for the bag’s working strap.

Unexpected details beyond scarves
10. Pin a brooch to a scarf or garment
A brooch can gather a scarf or add a compact focal point to a jacket or other garment. Vogue India’s accessory styling examples include brooches. Check that the pin closes securely, and avoid delicate or loosely woven fabric if the pin could snag or leave a hole.
11. Add shoe charms or ribbon laces
Use shoe charms on sneakers or loafers, or swap standard laces for decorative ribbon laces. Vogue India’s styling guide features both ideas as ways to personalize footwear. Make sure charms attach firmly and do not interfere with walking; tie ribbon laces securely so they do not trail underfoot.

12. Layer beads over a button-down and tailored jacket
Wear small beaded necklaces over a button-down shirt and jacket to create a point of interest where a tie or scarf might otherwise sit. Vogue’s runway styling guide shows beads layered over shirting and tailoring. Keep the necklace scale in proportion to the collar and lapels so the layers remain visible.
How to choose the right accessory placement
Think about the accessory’s size, drape, attachment, and relationship to the rest of the outfit. A large, fluid scarf allows more coverage and tying options than a narrow one; a printed scarf reads clearly against plain clothes, while a small neckerchief adds detail without taking over. For non-scarf pieces, consider whether the garment can support the accessory securely and whether you want it to be the focal point or a supporting accent.
- For a waist detail: Choose a scarf long enough to knot, or a belt whose scale works over the garment.
- For a scarf top: Use a square scarf with enough fabric for the coverage and ties you need.
- For a bag or shoe accent: Secure the accessory without obstructing the item’s normal use.
- For a polished focal point: Let one accessory provide the color, print, or texture, and keep other details simpler.
These are styling options, not universal rules. The runway examples and editorial guides illustrate possibilities; they do not establish that one look suits every wearer or occasion.
