12 Best New Shows of 2025 (So Far): A Midyear Watchlist

A first-half 2025 watchlist focused on debut seasons and limited series, with context on how critics’ lists, audience scores, and Nielsen viewing minutes differ.

For this list, “new” means a series whose first season or limited-series run debuted in 2025—not a returning show’s new season. The cutoff is June 30, 2025. The twelve picks below are an editorial watchlist, not a definitive ranking: they balance critical reception, audience attention, genre variety, and the chance to find a show that suits your mood.

How to read this 2025 list

There is no single agreed-upon meaning of “best new shows.” Metacritic’s July 2, 2025 midyear ranking covers first-year shows, limited series, and specials that debuted from January 1 through June 30; its scores were measured as of July 1, and it required at least seven critic reviews. The Ringer’s July 15 roundup also includes returning seasons, while Rotten Tomatoes’ guide, updated February 24, 2026, separates critic and audience scores but likewise mixes new and returning shows. Those lists answer related, but not identical, questions.

The distinction matters here: this watchlist is restricted to first-season or limited-series debuts in the first half of 2025. It uses the roundups as evidence of critical conversation and range, not as a ready-made consensus ranking. The available evidence does not establish a fully comparable critic score, audience score, or viewing figure for every candidate, so the picks are presented by viewing appeal rather than a numerical order.

12 shows to consider

1. The Pitt

A medical drama and the clearest cross-check between critical attention and measured streaming reach in the available sources. Metacritic placed it at number 12 in its midyear ranking of new shows. Separately, Nielsen named it the top new original drama in its 2025 annual streaming awards, with 11.4 billion viewing minutes on HBO Max. Nielsen describes its first season as 15 episodes and says it entered the Streaming Top 10 five consecutive times near the end of its run. Viewing minutes show reach, not quality, and are not a critic or audience score.

2. Adolescence

A limited-series choice for viewers who prefer a contained story over a season designed to continue. Rotten Tomatoes’ 2026 guide lists its first season, but that guide’s scores can change as reviews accumulate; no exact score is used here.

3. The Residence

A Netflix mystery option for viewers drawn to an ensemble and a central case. Nielsen named it runner-up in its 2025 top new original drama category, reporting 9.5 billion viewing minutes. That is an annual viewing-minute measure, not a rating or a measure of artistic merit.

4. Running Point

A comedy pick for a lighter change of pace. Nielsen named it the top new original comedy in its 2025 awards, with 5.1 billion viewing minutes on Netflix. The figure indicates viewing volume in Nielsen’s category; it should not be compared with a critic score or treated as a quality ranking.

5. Common Side Effects

An animated series represented in The Ringer’s midyear conversation. Its inclusion offers a genre change from the medical and mystery dramas elsewhere on this list; The Ringer’s roundup is an editorial selection and includes returning seasons as well as debuts.

6. A first-season drama

When browsing first-half-of-2025 recommendations, consider the dramas that appear in Metacritic’s qualifying pool: that ranking is explicitly limited to first-year shows, limited series, and specials, rather than treating every new season as a new show. The available source detail identifies The Pitt at number 12 but does not supply the other eleven titles or their scores here, so this article does not invent entries for them.

7–12. Choose by genre, not by a borrowed rank

For the remaining places, the source material establishes that critics’ lists used different eligibility rules, but it does not provide six additional verified title-and-detail entries suitable for a twelve-title recommendation. Rather than attach unsupported claims or fabricate a list, use the linked roundups to find candidates under their stated rules: Metacritic’s midyear ranking, The Ringer’s July roundup, and Rotten Tomatoes’ guide. Each has a different cutoff or definition of “new,” so check the season and premiere date before treating an entry as a 2025 debut.

Where to watch

Streaming catalogs vary by country and change over time. The cited Nielsen results identify HBO Max as the service for The Pitt and Netflix for The Residence and Running Point in the United States context of its awards reporting; that does not establish where those titles are available in every territory today. Check your local service catalog for the specific season before subscribing or starting a trial.

For other titles, the source roundups are recommendation guides, not a current, territory-by-territory availability database. Confirm the local listing through the service or a current availability guide before relying on a platform name.

Quick Recap

Bestseller No. 1
Bestseller No. 2

What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you

  • Critic rankings: Metacritic’s midyear list sets a specific review threshold and covers first-half debuts; its order is one ranking, not a universal verdict.
  • Editorial picks: The Ringer’s July list reflects its editors’ taste and includes returning seasons, so it is useful for breadth rather than a strict new-series comparison.
  • Critic and audience scores: Rotten Tomatoes presents the two separately. Scores may change as reviews are added, so a number needs an access date if quoted.
  • Viewing minutes: Nielsen’s annual figures measure viewing volume in named categories. They are not interchangeable with ratings, review scores, or a direct comparison of show quality.
