At 11 and in Year 6, Christ Church Grammar School student Eason Yin wrote Iron Frosted Snow: An Officer’s Journal, a reported 27,000-word historical novel set during the Battle of Stalingrad. The book uses the diary of a fictional military officer; PerthNow identifies him as German. Yin’s project combined nearly two years of independent historical research with a self-taught study of German.
What is Iron Frosted Snow: An Officer’s Journal about?
The novel is set during the Battle of Stalingrad and is told in the form of a military officer’s journal. PerthNow describes the diarist as a German military officer; Christ Church Grammar School’s announcement calls him a military officer without specifying his nationality. The diary is fictional, not a recovered historical document or a primary source about the battle.
The school reported the novel’s length as 27,000 words. PerthNow also reported that figure in 2025; it is a reported word count, not an independently audited total.
How did Yin prepare to write it?
Christ Church Grammar School says Yin spent nearly two years independently researching both World War I and World War II. He drew on books, documentaries and historical films, and taught himself German using Duolingo, a detail also reported by PerthNow.
#1 Best Overall
In Tina Altieri’s 30 July 2025 PerthNow report, Yin explained his reason for taking on the subject: “I wanted to write something meaningful,” he said. He added: “Even though I’m young, I think stories can help people understand the past and maybe make a better future.”
How was the book published, and where were proceeds intended to go?
The school says the book was published in collaboration with Bookmark League, a U.S.-based nonprofit. Both the school and PerthNow reported that Yin pledged all proceeds to No Kid Hungry. Youth Writers’ author profile gives a different account, saying a third of proceeds would go to children’s charities. The published accounts therefore do not agree on the share or destination; the pledge should not be treated as independently verified or assumed to describe the current arrangement.
