For a North American audience, these are 11 of 2024’s scariest horror releases, ranked by how effectively they unsettle: the kind of fear they use, the intensity they sustain, and how strongly their imagery or tension can linger. This is an editorial ranking, not an objective score; viewers who prefer gore, jump scares, or slow-burn dread may order the films differently.

How this ranking works

The list uses one consistent release rule: a film’s first wide release in North America took place during 2024. A festival screening or an earlier release in another country may predate that date. The ranking weighs scare mechanism, intensity, persistence after viewing, originality, and how clearly each film belongs to horror rather than an adjacent thriller. It does not treat box office or critical consensus as a measure of scariness.

That distinction matters: SlashFilm published a team ranking of ten films on December 10, 2024, while Time Out selected a different group of horror films. Neither establishes a definitive list of eleven. Their descriptions help distinguish styles of fear, but the order below is an independent editorial judgment. SlashFilm’s 2024 ranking and Time Out’s 2024 selection offer two points of comparison.

The 11 scariest movies of 2024, ranked

1. Nosferatu

For sustained, uncanny dread rather than a steady barrage of shocks, Nosferatu takes the top spot. Its fear comes from the oppressive sense of an approaching presence and the way the story makes that threat feel inescapable. SlashFilm also singled out its uncanny dread, a useful description of why the film’s atmosphere can feel more disturbing than a conventional jump-scare sequence.

2. The Substance

The Substance makes bodily transformation its central source of horror. Graphic body horror and deliberately confronting imagery give it a physical intensity that can be difficult to shake, even for viewers accustomed to supernatural scares. Time Out highlights the film’s body horror and graphic imagery; this is the strongest pick here for viewers who find the human body more unsettling than ghosts or creatures.

3. Longlegs

Longlegs builds psychological unease around a threatening presence and a grim investigative atmosphere. Its appeal is less about nonstop action than about the feeling that something is wrong before the film fully reveals why. It ranks high for viewers who respond to a slow accumulation of menace and unsettling imagery.

4. Oddity

Oddity turns an isolated setting into a source of pressure, then uses jump scares to punctuate that tension. SlashFilm describes its setting as tense and notes its jump scares. The combination gives the film a sharper, more immediate rhythm than the slowest entries here without relying on gore as its main attraction.

5. Alien: Romulus

Alien: Romulus delivers creature threat through chase sequences, jump scares, and sustained tension. Time Out emphasizes those elements, which make it a strong choice for viewers who want a brisker, more physical kind of fear. It ranks below the films above because its most prominent scares are built around immediate danger rather than lingering psychological unease.

6. Stopmotion

Stopmotion draws horror from the unsettling possibilities of its craft-centered premise and imagery. It suits viewers looking for something more visually and psychologically disquieting than a straightforward monster chase. Its inclusion in Time Out’s 2024 selection marks it as one of the year’s notable horror releases, though this ranking places its particular unease below the more forceful entries.

7. Strange Darling

Strange Darling sits near horror’s border with the thriller: its tension and uncertainty may be more effective than conventional supernatural scares. That makes it a compelling option for viewers who like suspense and shifting expectations, though those seeking an unmistakable horror experience may find its scare profile less direct than the films above it. Time Out included it in its 2024 selection.

8. Terrifier 3

Terrifier 3 is the list’s clearest choice for viewers seeking extreme gore and transgressive slasher violence. That intensity is a different proposition from creeping dread: it can be shocking and graphic, but it is not the best fit for everyone. SlashFilm reports that it considered the film but cut it from its final ten, underscoring how much a ranking depends on what a viewer values in horror.

9. Immaculate

Immaculate brings religious unease and a threatening setting into a contemporary horror story. Its premise favors atmosphere and mounting apprehension over creature-driven action. SlashFilm likewise considered it as a contender but excluded it from its final list, a reminder that even prominent year-end rankings draw different boundaries around the genre.

10. The First Omen

The First Omen is a supernatural horror pick for viewers drawn to ominous imagery and the dread of a threat taking shape. It offers a more familiar genre vocabulary than the more formally unusual entries higher up, but that can make it a useful choice when the goal is a recognizably dark, supernatural watch.

11. Late Night with the Devil

Late Night with the Devil channels horror through a staged broadcast and the unease of watching control slip away in a confined setting. The premise offers a distinctive framework for suspense, although its tension is less relentlessly intense than the films ranked above it. It rounds out the list as a good option for viewers who prefer a contained setup to a sustained assault of gore or shocks.

What the year’s box office does—and doesn’t—say

The Film Distributors’ Association’s 2025 yearbook reports that horror and suspense theatrical releases in the UK and Ireland generated £87.3 million in 2024, compared with £81.5 million across 73 releases in 2023. It counts 102 releases in 2024, including new titles and classic reissues. Those are market figures for that territory, not a ranking of which films were scariest or best. The yearbook’s top ten is ordered by box office, not fear. Film Distributors’ Association Yearbook 2025.
