A selfie can do more than show what someone looks like. People use self-portraits to express identity, keep a record of ordinary moments, stay connected and make parts of their lives visible to others. These are meaningful uses—not guaranteed psychological benefits: studies find mixed, context-dependent links between selfie activity and well-being.
10 reasons selfies matter
-
They let people express personal identity
Choosing a setting, expression, outfit or caption can communicate how someone sees themselves or wants to be understood. A survey of 472 young adults examined selfies as expressions of personal and social identity; it supports treating them as a form of self-presentation, not simply appearance display. Valerie Barker and Nathian S. Rodriguez’s 2019 study.
-
They show group and social identity
A selfie with friends, family or a community can say “I belong here” as much as “this is me.” The people and context in the frame help convey relationships, affiliations and shared experiences.
-
They document a moment
A selfie can preserve a face alongside a place, event or occasion. Unlike a photo taken by someone else, it also records the subject’s choice to be part of the image, making it a personal form of documentation.

They preserve and exchange information about everyday life
People may share selfies to show where they are, what they are doing or what matters to them. In a 2021 study of 96 respondents in Moscow—mainly psychology students—participants reported motives that included preserving or exchanging information. That small, specific sample should not be treated as representative of all selfie users. Elena A. Nikitina’s study.
-
They help people maintain contact
Sending a selfie can be a quick way to check in, share an update or keep a conversation going. Nikitina’s Moscow study also identified maintaining social contacts as a reported motive for publishing selfies; it describes participants’ reasons, not a universal effect.

They can invite belonging and social response
Posting a self-portrait may invite friends or followers to respond, affirm a connection or acknowledge an experience. Such feedback can matter to the person posting, but the value of a response depends on the person, audience and circumstances.
-
They offer a way to explore self-image
Taking a picture lets someone consider how they appear and decide whether an image feels like them. The process may be playful or reflective, but it can also make appearance feel more central. A 2024 study distinguished taking selfies from sharing them: people more inclined to take than share reported greater control and self-esteem on the study’s measures. Those findings do not establish that taking selfies improves self-esteem for everyone. The 2024 study on selfie-taking and sharing.

They can make underrepresented identities visible
For people whose identities or experiences are often overlooked, a self-portrait can offer a direct way to represent themselves rather than rely on someone else’s portrayal. In Barker and Rodriguez’s survey, selfie use for empowerment among LGBTQ participants correlated with online activism. This is an association in that study, not proof that selfies cause activism.
-
They can communicate personal meaning or empowerment
A selfie may mark a milestone, express pride or show a person on their own terms. Its significance can come from the meaning attached to the image, not from how many people see or like it. The same act may feel empowering to one person and uncomfortable to another.

They create a record people can revisit
Selfies can become part of a personal archive: images to look back on, compare or share later. Their importance may emerge over time, when a casual picture becomes a reminder of a relationship, place or period in someone’s life.
Why selfies do not affect everyone the same way
Taking a picture, deciding to post it and receiving a response are different experiences. A private selfie may be about self-documentation; a public post adds an audience and the possibility of feedback. Research on self-esteem and mood reflects that variety rather than a single, reliable effect.

- A questionnaire study of 442 Chinese young adult women found that selfie-posting was positively associated with self-esteem, with positive feedback and body satisfaction mediating the relationship. Because it was survey research, it cannot show that posting caused higher self-esteem. Yuhui Wang and co-authors’ study.
- In a 2020 experiment involving 120 women, selfie-takers showed higher self-objectification, more negative mood and diminished self-esteem than participants photographing objects. The result applies to the study’s participants and conditions, not to every person who takes a selfie. The 2020 Body Image experiment.
- A 2018 experiment with 110 female undergraduate students compared posting an untouched selfie, a preferred retouched selfie and a control condition to investigate mood and body image. It examined young women in a specific experimental context, not a population-wide outcome. The 2018 Body Image study.
Together, these studies do not establish that selfies reliably raise or lower well-being. The results differ by sample, method and activity, so it is more accurate to describe selfies as tools for expression, connection and documentation whose personal effects depend on context.
