IMDb’s Top 250 is a chart of user-rated theatrical feature films, not a universal verdict on the best movies. IMDb’s captured chart excerpt identifies these seven leaders, but does not establish positions 8–10. Because the chart is dynamic, those missing entries should not be guessed; check the live IMDb Top 250 for the complete current list.

What IMDb’s Top 250 ranking represents
The chart covers theatrical feature films. IMDb excludes shorts, TV movies, miniseries, and documentaries. Only ratings from regular IMDb users count toward chart inclusion, and a film needs at least 25,000 ratings to qualify. IMDb does not publish the criteria it uses to classify a voter as a regular user. These rules are described in IMDb’s Ratings FAQ.
Are IMDb ratings weighted?
Yes. IMDb says the displayed title rating is a weighted average, not a simple arithmetic mean, and that ratings update numerous times per day. Its general method for calculating title ratings is not fully disclosed.

IMDb separately documents the formula used to calculate Top 250 chart rank:
WR = (v ÷ (v + m)) × R + (m ÷ (v + m)) × C
- R: the film’s mean rating.
- v: the film’s number of ratings.
- m: the current minimum rating count for the chart, 25,000.
- C: the mean rating across the report.
This Bayesian weighted estimate means chart order is not simply a sort by raw average score. The formula published for the chart should not be mistaken for a complete account of IMDb’s undisclosed methods for calculating title ratings or addressing manipulation.

How to use the chart when choosing a film
Use the ranking as a way to find widely rated films, not as proof that one film is objectively better than another. IMDb’s Help page, updated 9 February 2026, puts it this way: “Think of ratings more as a guide than as an incontrovertible qualitative verdict.” It also notes that opinions about film and TV quality are subjective.
Displayed scores are rounded, and even small differences do not establish a meaningful gap in quality. Rankings and ratings can move as votes change. For viewing details, check each film’s listing and the streaming services available in your region; availability varies by territory.
