His best-known moments included a helped pin of The Rock, a tag-team run with Kane, and a later shift back to wrestling under the name Gregory Helms.
1. The man behind the mask was Gregory Shane Helms
WWE identifies The Hurricane as Gregory Shane Helms. The masked superhero was a character Helms performed, not a different wrestler; WWE’s profile presents both identities as part of his career. WWE’s profile of The Hurricane is the source for his biography and listed accomplishments.
2. He joined WWE after WCW folded
Helms signed with WWE in 2001, after WCW folded. He arrived as the reigning WCW Cruiserweight Champion, bringing an established championship identity with him rather than starting his WWE career as an unknown newcomer, according to WWE’s profile.
3. The Hurricane was a superhero character
WWE describes The Hurricane as a superhero. The costume and larger-than-life identity gave Helms a deliberately comic presentation, distinct from the more conventional wrestler persona he used later as Gregory Helms. The character and the wrestler’s technical credentials could coexist; the shift between them was a change in emphasis, not proof that one was better.

4. WWE lists four championship categories
WWE’s profile lists Helms as a Cruiserweight, Hardcore, European, and World Tag Team Champion. The profile names these categories but does not provide a complete title chronology or an exact combined reign count, so those details should not be inferred from the list.
5. The Hurricane pinned The Rock—with help
One of the character’s most memorable moments came when The Hurricane chokeslammed and pinned The Rock. WWE’s account explicitly says Stone Cold Steve Austin helped; it was not an unassisted victory over Rock. WWE’s retrospective on the match revisited the moment in 2007.

6. WWE later framed it as his first Raw main event
In that 2007 retrospective, WWE described the Rock match as The Hurricane’s first Raw main event. That is WWE’s retrospective framing of the opportunity, not a claim that the match was a clean, solo win. Helms recalled the occasion: “I remember being excited and nervous, but I felt like I belonged there.” He also said, “I had no trepidation. As soon as my music hit I was ready.” Both comments were published in WWE’s October 12, 2007 retrospective and reflect his recollection of that match, not a current statement.
7. Kane was his partner in the tag-title run
The Hurricane’s World Tag Team Championship accomplishment was tied to Kane: WWE’s profile notes that Helms held the tag titles with him. The pairing joined the masked superhero with the much larger Kane, making the contrast part of the team’s appeal, while the official profile establishes the championship connection.

8. The Hurricane’s secret identity followed him to ECW
The character also appeared on WWE’s relaunched ECW. WWE’s profile notes that the story played on the contrast between masked Hurricane and reporter Gregory Helms, turning the secret-identity conceit into part of the on-screen setup rather than leaving it as a detail known only to viewers.
9. Helms later put the focus back on wrestling
After New Year’s Revolution 2006, Helms appeared in a WWE interview as Gregory Helms, following his match with Jerry Lawler. He said he wanted to move away from making fans laugh and put the emphasis back on his wrestling skills. That was Helms explaining his own career choice at the time; it does not mean the Hurricane character lacked wrestling ability. WWE’s 2006 interview with Gregory Helms records his remarks.

10. His original WWE run ended in 2010
WWE announced Helms’s release on February 26, 2010, and its profile says he left the company that month. Later WWE appearances and work are a separate part of his story, not a continuation of the original run. In 2021, a report quoting WWE’s The Bump discussed Helms’s producer role at that time and his return appearance at the Royal Rumble; that report establishes historical context, not his employment status in 2026. WWE’s release announcement documents the 2010 departure, and the 2021 report covers the later role and appearance.
