The Honky Tonk Man was more than an Elvis-inspired entrance and a guitar: Wayne Farris turned a fan-friendly act into one of WWE’s most effective villains, then held the Intercontinental Championship for nearly 15 months. Here are 10 key facts about the character, his title run, and the record he no longer holds.
1. Wayne Farris created the character’s look
The performer behind The Honky Tonk Man was Wayne Farris. WWE’s 2019 Hall of Fame recap credits Farris with creating the character’s look, which helped make the persona recognizable at a glance. WWE’s induction recap describes how the character became a household name.

2. The Elvis-inspired act was built to be seen and heard
Slicked-back hair, long sideburns, rockabilly styling, and a guitar gave Honky an Elvis-like silhouette. He also performed his own entrance music, making the singing part of the act rather than just an introduction. The combination announced his boastful showman persona before he wrestled. WWE’s profile and its 2019 Hall of Fame announcement recount the musical, Elvis-inspired presentation.
3. He was first presented as a good guy
When Honky arrived in WWE in 1986, he tried to win over the crowd with a smile and an entertainer’s charm. The response was hostile. WWE’s account says he reacted to an overwhelmingly negative “vote of confidence” by turning against the audience. That vote is part of the storyline, not a published real-world survey statistic; the important shift was that the rejected, cheerful performer became a deliberate antagonist. WWE’s induction announcement and profile describe the turn.

4. Jimmy Hart helped make the heel act sharper
Honky enlisted manager Jimmy Hart, whose presence complemented his brash performance. WWE says Honky grew more confident and devious both in the ring and on the microphone. The pairing gave the character a loud, scheming edge that fit his new role as someone audiences were meant to dislike. WWE’s profile and Hall of Fame announcement cover the partnership.
5. He took the Intercontinental title from Ricky Steamboat
On June 2, 1987, Honky defeated Intercontinental Champion Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat to win the championship. WWE’s profile says Honky used the ropes for leverage during the victory, a fittingly crafty detail for a wrestler whose character had become a rule-bending heel. WWE’s title-history ledger dates the change of title to June 2.

6. The reign lasted nearly 15 months—and WWE lists two different day counts
Honky held the championship from June 2, 1987, until August 29, 1988. WWE’s current title-history ledger lists the reign as 453 days. A separate WWE figure—the 2019 Hall of Fame announcement—calls it 454 days. Those official pages differ by one day; the available records do not explain why. “Nearly 15 months” conveys the length without treating the two published counts as interchangeable.
| WWE source | Honky’s listed reign | What it says |
|---|---|---|
| Current Intercontinental Championship title history | 453 days | June 2, 1987–August 29, 1988 |
| 2019 Hall of Fame announcement | 454 days | Retrospective prose; the figure differs by one day from the current ledger |
7. Ultimate Warrior ended the run at SummerSlam
Honky’s reign ended on August 29, 1988, at SummerSlam, when Ultimate Warrior answered his open challenge and took the title in a rapid victory. WWE’s profile and Hall of Fame account emphasize how abruptly the championship changed hands. The exact match duration is not needed to understand the result, and WWE’s retrospective wording varies. WWE’s profile, 2019 announcement, and title history record the title change.

For years, WWE retrospectives described Honky as the record holder. That is no longer current: Gunther passed the mark in September 2023. WWE’s September 4, 2023 Raw results say his win over Chad Gable secured the distinction, and WWE’s current title-history ledger lists Gunther’s reign at 666 days, from June 10, 2022, to April 6, 2024.
| Champion | WWE title-history listing | Reign dates |
|---|---|---|
| The Honky Tonk Man | 453 days | June 2, 1987–August 29, 1988 |
| Gunther | 666 days | June 10, 2022–April 6, 2024 |
Both figures are from WWE’s current Intercontinental Championship title history. The comparison is useful when reading older WWE pages that still call Honky the record holder.

9. He had roles beyond the championship run
WWE’s career recap also points to Honky’s later appearances in other roles. He teamed with Greg Valentine as part of Rhythm & Blues, later managed Rockabilly—Billy Gunn—and appeared in 2008 in a segment involving then-Intercontinental Champion Santino Marella. These moments show how the character could return as a tag-team act, manager, or veteran foil rather than only as a titleholder. See WWE’s profile and Hall of Fame announcement.
10. WWE inducted him into the Hall of Fame in 2019
Honky joined the WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2019. WWE’s ceremony recap places the induction in Brooklyn on April 5, 2019, and offers a glimpse of Wayne Farris beyond the character’s swagger. In his speech, he said, “For all this, I will be forever grateful to WWE.” He also reflected on the unpredictability of returning to the company: “Never say never in WWE because you never know what’s going to happen.” Both lines appear in WWE’s induction recap.
