Before AEW, the Lucha Bros had already built careers that crossed singles competition, tag-team wrestling, Mexican lucha libre, U.S. television and the independent circuit. Their story runs from years of training and AAA roots through the visibility of Lucha Underground to championship goals in MLW and Impact. Here are ten details that show how both brothers developed into more than a team.
1. They started as brothers who loved lucha libre
Rey Fenix and Penta grew up playing lucha libre as children before going to a gym to train. In a 2017 interview, Fenix recalled that early shared enthusiasm. Penta’s account adds a practical turning point: he pushed the brothers to look for wrestling work beyond their hometown. Their partnership began with family and a common interest, but it also involved a decision to pursue a wider career.
2. Their training took years of daily work
Fenix and Penta said they trained with Skayde for four years. In the translated 2017 interview, Penta recalled: “It took us four years of training all day every single day.” That is his recollection, not an independently audited training schedule, but it gives a sense of the commitment the brothers described before their careers expanded.
3. Pentagon Jr. was a role assigned in AAA, not a name he originated
In an interview, Penta said AAA asked him to take on the Pentagon Jr. character while the promotion created Octagon Jr. He described persisting with the role and connected its broader recognition to Lucha Underground. The historic Pentagon character had been portrayed by multiple wrestlers, so Penta’s importance is in how he developed his version—not in originating the name.

4. Lucha Underground helped bring them to U.S. television audiences
The official Season 1 episode guide names Fenix and Pentagon Jr. in its episode descriptions, including a three-way main event in episode 3. In a 2017 interview, the brothers described the series as a way for AAA talent to reach American viewers and said they became widely recognized during its first season. It offered audiences a character-driven television setting for their wrestling, distinct from the usual promotion format.
5. Each had a singles identity as well as a place in the team
The brothers were not simply a tag team waiting to be formed. A 2019 profile describes Pentagon as a central villain in Lucha Underground and notes his championship run there; it also identifies Fenix as an AAA singles champion. Those examples point to distinct individual careers alongside the brothers’ shared work. The available sources establish the accomplishments in broad terms, rather than a complete title chronology.

6. Their work extended beyond the television series
A 2017 feature says AAA’s contract arrangements allowed the brothers to accept bookings around the world. The independent dates helped them establish themselves beyond Lucha Underground and build an international wrestling presence. Their careers were developing across promotions, not only in front of the series’ television audience.
7. They wrestled against each other as well as together
MLW’s retrospective offers a clear example of both sides of their relationship in one promotion: they had a singles match on the first episode of Fusion, then pursued the World Tag Team Championship as partners. The rivalry and the team were not competing versions of their history; each gave the brothers a different way to work together on screen.

8. Their Impact run included a tag-team milestone against LAX
In a February 2019 interview, Fenix praised LAX as a strong team and discussed their match at Impact’s Homecoming. He also said that becoming tag-team champions was one of the brothers’ Impact career objectives—and that they had achieved it. The milestone shows how their shared ambitions translated into championship success outside AAA and Lucha Underground.
9. Their styles complemented one another
Penta described his wrestling as different from Fenix’s and said they combined what each could do. The interview presents Penta as the more forceful presence and Fenix as calmer and more aerial. That contrast helps explain their chemistry without reducing either brother to a single move set: they could bring different energies into the same match.

Read alongside their singles work and their time in AAA and Lucha Underground, that résumé shows why the AEW chapter was a next step rather than the start of their careers. The sources establish a broad path across promotions, not a full match-by-match timeline or an authoritative title ledger.
