CM Punk’s final WWE match at the 2014 Royal Rumble was followed by his departure from the company. In a November 2014 interview with Colt Cabana, Punk said he had been unhappy for a long time and that his health was the biggest reason he left. His account also included disputes over booking, royalties and what happened after the Rumble. WWE later disputed his description of the medical issue. Here are ten key facts, with each account attributed to the person or organization that made it.
1. The 2014 Royal Rumble was Punk’s last WWE match at the time
WWE’s CM Punk profile identifies the 2014 Royal Rumble as his final WWE match before his eventual return. The event took place on January 26, 2014, according to WWE’s later statement about the dispute.
2. “Walkout” describes a sequence, not one complete explanation
Punk’s account was that he left after the Royal Rumble and a subsequent meeting on Raw. That shorthand does not, by itself, explain every later employment or contract event. In his November interview, he described the departure as the result of mounting unhappiness rather than a single public moment.
3. Punk said he had been unhappy for a long time
Speaking to Colt Cabana on Art of Wrestling in November 2014, Punk said leaving was a difficult decision that had been building. He summarized his feelings this way: “I guess the black and the white of it, when you just boil it all down, the essence of it, was I was miserable, I was unhappy, fuck it! I made myself happy; I left.” The statement is Punk’s own retrospective explanation.

4. He said his health was the biggest factor
Punk acknowledged that frustration with storylines and his career played a part, but said health was the biggest reason behind his decision. That is his account of his motives, not an independently established finding about why he left.
5. Punk and WWE gave different accounts of the medical dispute
Punk described having an untreated mass on his back and raised other health concerns in the interview. WWE disputed whether it had been informed. In a February 20, 2015 statement, the company said: “CM Punk did not discuss this alleged condition with WWE’s team of physicians and trainers, nor did he discuss it with anyone in our Talent Relations department.” WWE also said it had no medical records documenting the alleged condition.

These are conflicting public accounts: Punk’s first-person recollection and WWE’s official response. The available reporting does not independently settle whether the condition was reported or what medical records existed.
6. Punk said WWE suspended him for two months
In his interview, Punk said WWE suspended him for two months after the Royal Rumble. He said that when the suspension ended, he received no message from the company, and that he later heard Vince McMahon describe him as being on sabbatical. These details are Punk’s account of the period after his departure.

7. He said a royalty dispute added to the breakdown
Punk also described trying to resolve royalty checks he believed were unpaid or had been reissued. The interview is the basis for this account; it should not be read as independent confirmation of the amount or status of any royalties.
8. Punk said he received termination papers on his wedding day
One of the most repeated details from the interview is Punk’s claim that he received termination papers on his wedding day. The available account is his recollection, as transcribed and reported at the time, rather than a separately established finding.

9. The later legal disputes were separate matters
Punk said the terms of his settlement with WWE were confidential. Separately, Forbes reported in September 2019 that lawsuits between Punk and Cabana over legal fees connected to the WWE doctor case had been settled and dismissed by agreement. Those fee lawsuits were distinct from the original employment dispute and should not be treated as a ruling on the competing medical accounts.

WWE’s profile says Punk returned at Survivor Series: WarGames in 2023. His 2014 departure therefore did not become a permanent break from the company, although that later return does not change what he said about his reasons for leaving at the time.

What the accounts establish—and what they do not
The clearest distinction is between the events WWE identifies and the explanations offered by the participants. WWE identifies the Royal Rumble as Punk’s last match before his return and issued a formal response to his medical allegations. Punk described his unhappiness, health concerns and disputes with the company in a first-person interview. Later reporting on the Punk–Cabana legal-fee case concerns a separate dispute. The public material summarized here does not resolve the medical disagreement.
