There is no verified, universal list of ten TV shows every child should watch and five every family should avoid. A better starting point is to match a program to your child’s age, interests, and sensitivities, then check its specific content and messages. Here are six attributed examples—not a ranked top ten—plus a practical way to identify shows that may not suit your household.

What age is the show aimed at?

Age labels are useful starting points, not guarantees. Common Sense Media recommends considering a child’s development, temperament, interests, and family values. A fantasy scene that one seven-year-old finds exciting may frighten another. Read the current review and, when possible, watch an episode before making a decision. Common Sense Media’s TV-rating guidance says its detailed written reviews help families know what to expect.

These age recommendations are Common Sense Media’s editorial guidance, not objective guarantees of suitability. They are examples rather than a complete or verified ten-show slate.

Show Common Sense Media age recommendation Why it may be worth considering What to keep in mind
Bea’s Block 2+ A preschool series that offers examples of kindness and empathy. Check whether its pace and stories suit your child.
Ms. Rachel 2+ Musical learning shorts aimed at young children. Consider how it fits alongside conversation, play, and other activities.
Avatar: The Last Airbender 8+ A fantasy series with compelling characters and a story about fighting for peace. It includes action; check the current review and your child’s response to conflict and peril.
MythBusters 9+ A team tests urban legends, offering a springboard for scientific thinking. Talk about how a claim is tested and what the evidence shows.
NOVA 10+ A science series for curious viewers. Topics and presentation can vary by episode.
Doctor Who 10+ A long-running science-fiction adventure series. Episode-level scares and other sensitivities may vary; review individual episodes for a child who is easily unsettled.

Common Sense Media’s educational TV shows list was last updated June 10, 2026. Recommendation ages and program details can change, so consult its current review rather than treating this table as a permanent rating.

How do you tell whether a show is worth your child’s attention?

Look beyond the premise or animation style. A cartoon is not automatically preschool programming, and a show described as educational may still contain material that does not fit your child. Consider the whole viewing experience:

  • Developmental fit: Does your child understand the story, or is the pacing, peril, or subject matter too intense?
  • Content: Check for violence or frightening scenes, sexual content, language, and substance use.
  • Quality and learning: Does the program invite children to think, ask questions, or learn, or is it mainly passive entertainment?
  • Messages and role models: Notice how characters treat one another, what behavior is rewarded, whether stereotypes appear, and whether actions have consequences.
  • Commercial pressure: Look for advertising, product placement, and a strong push toward character merchandise.
  • Your child’s response: Pay attention to whether the show leads to curiosity and conversation or to fear, distress, or behavior you do not want to encourage.

What should families consider avoiding?

No research-based set of five universally inappropriate shows is established here, and a blanket ban list would ignore differences among children, episodes, and household values. Instead, treat these as reasons to pause, review, or choose something else—not as proof that a whole program is wrong for every child:

  • Violence, peril, or frightening imagery that your child finds upsetting.
  • Sexual material, language, or substance use that conflicts with your family’s boundaries or the child’s maturity.
  • Messages or role models that normalize behavior you do not want reinforced, including harmful stereotypes or cruelty without meaningful consequences.
  • Heavy commercial pressure that makes the program feel like an advertisement for products or merchandise.
  • Viewing that regularly crowds out sleep, family connection, schoolwork, play, or exercise.

Use the current episode or program review to check specific concerns. A show’s general premise is not enough to establish what appears in every episode, and a family may reasonably set a stricter boundary than an age recommendation suggests.

How can you make the choice with your child?

For school-age children, use the AAP’s 5 C’s

The American Academy of Pediatrics’ 5 C’s framework is a way to make media decisions around the child and the family context:

  • Child: Consider this child’s age, temperament, interests, and needs.
  • Content: Ask whether the show is worthwhile and whether its messages and material fit.
  • Calm: Notice whether media is being used to manage emotions and how it affects the child’s ability to settle.
  • Crowding Out: Ask what viewing displaces, especially sleep, relationships, schoolwork, and active play.
  • Communication: Watch together or talk about what happened and what the child thinks about it.

The AAP advises putting devices away at bedtime and not allowing screens to displace sleep and other activities. Its 5 C’s guidance was last updated April 30, 2024. Co-viewing can help you assess messages and behavior; if something does not fit, look for an alternative. Family settings and parental controls can filter some material, but they are not fully effective.

For children ages 3–8, make viewing part of a balanced day

Common Sense Media recommends setting family rules for when, how long, and where screens are used; matching programs to a child’s age and interests; and choosing content that encourages active thought. When possible, watch together or talk about the program afterward. It also advises balancing screen use with sleep, family connection, play, and exercise, and making viewing social where possible. See its screen-time guidance for parents.
