But other rankings published that year put his estimated wealth at $1.3 billion, while a separate report measured artists’ annual earnings rather than net worth. There was no single consistent, audited ranking of the world’s richest rappers in 2021.
University Magazine’s 2021 top 10
University Magazine published this ranking on October 4, 2021; the page is now marked as updated July 6, 2025. Its figures are estimates, with most attributed to Celebrity Net Worth. The table reflects the order and amounts in the article’s list heading, not a unified or audited valuation. University Magazine’s list

| 10 | Ice Cube | $160 million |
There is an internal typo in University Magazine’s Jay-Z passage: its list heading gives $1.3 billion, while the paragraph prints “$.3 billion.” The table uses the heading’s figure and flags the discrepancy rather than treating the malformed amount as a valid estimate.
Why other 2021 net-worth lists disagree
These rankings should be read as separate publishers’ estimates, not as competing measurements produced under one shared standard. Kanye West’s reported figure alone varies sharply across the lists.

| Publisher and date | Kanye West | Jay-Z | Other figures or distinctions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fakaza News, May 13, 2021 | $1.3 billion estimated net worth | $1 billion estimated net worth | Also lists Sean Combs at $900 million, Dr. Dre at $780 million, and the same other names and amounts through Ice Cube as the University Magazine list. Fakaza News ranking |
| Wealthy Persons, November 2021 | $1.3 billion estimated net worth | $1 billion estimated net worth | Reports Diddy at $855 million, Dr. Dre at $820 million, Master P at $350 million, Eminem at $220 million, Drake at $200 million, Ice Cube at $160 million, Lil Wayne at $155 million, Snoop Dogg at $135 million, and Birdman at $125 million. The publisher says it considers past earnings, financial documents, current holdings, and industry statistics, but does not reconcile its estimate with the other lists. Wealthy Persons ranking |
The differences are not just small changes in rounding: University Magazine reports $6.6 billion for West, while Fakaza News and Wealthy Persons each report $1.3 billion. The available list pages do not establish a common valuation method that would explain or resolve the gap.

A separate ranking reported by Digital Music News covers a different question: how much artists earned during calendar year 2021, before deductions. It is attributed to an ex-Forbes editor and measures pre-tax earnings before agent, manager, lawyer, and living-expense deductions—not accumulated wealth. Its reported figures were Jay-Z, $470 million; Kanye West, $250 million; Diddy, $75 million; Drake, $50 million; Wiz Khalifa, $45 million; Travis Scott, $38 million; DJ Khaled, $35 million; Eminem, $28 million; J. Cole, $27 million; and Birdman, Doja Cat, and Tech N9ne tied at $25 million. The report calls the ranking a top ten while listing tied entries through twelfth place. Rank #2
The report appeared in 2022, but the earnings period it describes is calendar year 2021. Its $470 million for Jay-Z and $250 million for West therefore cannot be compared directly with net-worth estimates: annual income is a flow over a period, while net worth is an estimate of assets minus liabilities at a point in time.
Quick Recap
Best Value
Rank #4
- 2Pac's Greatest Hits is the posthumous collection originally released in November 1998
Rank #3
- First-ever pressing of Ken Carson's debut studio album, Project X, for its 5-year anniversary
How to interpret the ranking
- Keep the measure attached to each number. A net-worth estimate and a year’s pre-tax earnings answer different questions.
- Keep the publisher and date attached too. The rankings are publisher-specific estimates, and University Magazine’s page now shows a 2025 update date despite its original 2021 publication.
- Do not read the order as an audited result. The reviewed lists do not provide a common, independently validated basis for comparing the artists’ wealth.
- Notice list conventions. Some lists include ties, and the Digital Music News article’s “top ten” label extends to tied entries at twelfth place.
