Eight performers stand out in a documented screen history of Cinderella: Mary Pickford, Julie Andrews, Lesley Ann Warren, Brandy, Drew Barrymore, Anne Hathaway, Anna Kendrick and Lily James. The connection is not identical in every case: some portray Cinderella directly, while others lead films that retell or rework the fairy tale.

Direct Cinderella portrayals

These performances come from productions explicitly presented as Cinderella adaptations. The first three are versions of the Rodgers & Hammerstein television musical; James stars in Disney’s later live-action feature.

Julie Andrews — Cinderella (1957)

Andrews starred as Cinderella in the original Rodgers & Hammerstein television production. It is a direct portrayal in a musical staged for television, rather than a theatrical film. D23’s account of the television productions documents the original telecast and its later remake.

Lesley Ann Warren — Cinderella (1965)

Warren played Cinderella in the 1965 television remake of the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical. Her performance belongs to a separate production from Andrews’s 1957 telecast, even though both draw on the same musical. D23 records the connection between the two.

Brandy — Cinderella (1997)

Brandy is the lead in Disney’s 1997 television film, playing Cinderella; Whitney Houston plays the Fairy Godmother. This is another screen version of the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, with a distinct cast and production. D23’s production history and Disney’s film page identify the production and cast.

Lily James — Cinderella (2015)

James plays Ella, the character known as Cinderella, in Disney’s live-action feature. The film presents the familiar fairy-tale heroine in a theatrical production rather than a television musical. Disney’s official film page identifies James in the lead role.

Actresses in Cinderella-story retellings

The following films are commonly grouped with Cinderella adaptations, but their heroines are not all literally named Cinderella. They belong on a broader list of performers who have played the story’s heroine or a reimagined equivalent—not a strict list of actresses who portrayed the character by name.

Mary Pickford — Cinderella (1914)

Pickford appeared in the silent-era film Cinderella, an early screen entry in the story’s history. TIME includes her among the performers associated with Cinderella on screen. TIME’s overview provides the historical context.

Drew Barrymore — Ever After: A Cinderella Story (1998)

Barrymore leads a romantic, historically framed reworking of the Cinderella story. The film’s heroine is Danielle, not a character named Cinderella, so Barrymore’s role is best described as a Cinderella-story heroine. TIME includes the film in its overview of screen retellings.

Anne Hathaway — Ella Enchanted (2004)

Hathaway plays Ella in a fantasy adaptation that draws on Cinderella-story elements while reshaping them. The character is Ella rather than Cinderella, and the film is a looser retelling, not a direct portrayal of the traditional character. TIME groups it within the broader Cinderella-screen tradition.

Anna Kendrick — Into the Woods (2014)

Kendrick plays Cinderella in the screen adaptation of the stage musical Into the Woods. Its heroine is explicitly Cinderella, but the film places her story among several fairy-tale narratives rather than telling a standalone Cinderella romance. TIME identifies Kendrick’s film among screen portrayals associated with the story.

How to choose a version

  • For the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical: Choose among Andrews (1957), Warren (1965) and Brandy (1997). They are separate television productions of the same musical lineage.
  • For a live-action Disney fairy-tale feature: James’s 2015 film is the direct choice.
  • For a historical screen reference: Pickford’s 1914 film offers an early silent-era example.
  • For substantial reinvention: Barrymore’s Ever After and Hathaway’s Ella Enchanted adapt the story’s familiar pattern rather than presenting a literal Cinderella portrayal.
  • For Cinderella within an ensemble fairy-tale musical: Kendrick’s Into the Woods places her in a larger, interconnected story.

Why this list has eight names, not ten

The title’s count cannot be supported responsibly by the available verified credits. Camila Cabello is associated with the 2021 film Cinderella, and June Thorburn with a 1958 screen version, but the production-level sources available here do not establish those credits. They are excluded rather than included on an unverified basis.

The list also distinguishes live-action and television portrayals from animation. Disney identifies Ilene Woods as the voice of Cinderella in the 1950 animated feature; that is a significant screen performance, but a voice role rather than an on-screen acting portrayal. Disney’s page for the 1950 film lists Woods in the voice cast.
