Yes—but “without major labels” covers several different routes. Some musicians built careers on artist-owned or independent labels; others released independently after a major-label deal, or reached an audience on their own before negotiating industry services. These ten examples show how those paths worked at particular points in each artist’s career, not a guarantee that independence alone produces success.

What “success without a major label” means

Independence is not one fixed status. It can mean owning a label, releasing through an independent company, distributing work directly, or returning to independent releases after meeting a major-label contract. The distinction matters: several musicians below had major-label ties before or after the period that made their independent work notable.

The examples are best compared by the arrangement and audience-building method in the period described, alongside a dated marker such as an award or chart position. The available evidence does not establish a comparable revenue ranking, or prove that independence itself caused any artist’s success.

Artist Arrangement in the period described Audience route Dated marker
Ani DiFranco Founded her own label, Righteous Babe Records, in 1990 Long-running self-directed releases Official biography describes her as an early artist-label founder
Chance the Rapper Released early mixtapes and Coloring Book without record-company backing Free mixtapes, online releases, touring, merchandise, and promotion with Apple Three Grammy wins in 2017, including Best New Artist
Macklemore Built an audience with self-released music, then negotiated a deal Independent audience-building before industry services TIME reports his rise to fame followed self-released music
Amanda Palmer Bypassed the traditional label route in the period TIME covered Patreon and other platforms, merchandise, and live shows TIME described a large following and direct-to-fan income channels
Frank Ocean Released Blonde through his own Boys Don’t Cry label after fulfilling a major-label obligation with Endless Independent release after a major-label chapter The Recording Academy documents the sequence of releases
Cuco Described as label-independent in the Recording Academy’s 2018 profile Online followers and self-produced releases Profile noted a Coachella performance
Mýa Founded Planet 9 after leaving her label following 2008’s Sugar & Spice Independent EPs, a mixtape, and albums The Recording Academy describes her post-label releases
Aloe Blacc First two albums appeared on independent Stones Throw Records before an Interscope deal Independent-label releases before a major-label move Lift Your Spirit followed the move to Interscope
Ashanti Established Written Entertainment with eOne Music in 2011 after her prior deal ended Independent company and release BraveHeart debuted at No. 10 on the Billboard 200 in 2014
Hanson Released Underneath on its own 3CG Records in 2004 after major labels passed Own-label comeback “Penny & Me” reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, according to the Recording Academy’s 2018 article

Artists who built or reached an audience independently

Ani DiFranco: an artist-owned label from the start

Ani DiFranco’s independent model was not a single self-released album. Her official biography says she created Righteous Babe Records in 1990, among the first artists to establish her own label, and links that choice to creative freedom outside the major-label system. It is an example of a durable artist-owned operation rather than a short independent phase. Read DiFranco’s official biography.

Chance the Rapper: free mixtapes, streaming, and live income

In a 2017 Vanity Fair interview, Chance said he handed out free mixtapes in high school, put early work online, and declined label offers after meeting with major companies. He described his own income mix this way: “I make money from touring and selling merchandise, and I honestly believe if you put effort into something and you execute properly, you don’t necessarily have to go through the traditional ways.” That is his account of his career, not a general formula for musicians. Read the 2017 interview.

Coloring Book was released without record-company backing, though Chance’s close promotional relationship with Apple shows that label independence need not mean avoiding corporate partnerships. In 2017, he won three Grammys, including Best New Artist. The Guardian’s 2016 coverage of Coloring Book and the Recording Academy’s Grammy account document those milestones.

Macklemore: leverage from a self-built fan base

Macklemore’s path was independent audience-building followed by negotiation, not permanent separation from industry services. TIME reports that he rose to fame after releasing music on his own and then used the fan support he had built to negotiate a better deal. TIME’s account also discusses Amanda Palmer’s direct-to-fan model.

Amanda Palmer: direct-to-fan relationships

In the period covered by TIME, Palmer bypassed the traditional label route and built a large following through Patreon and other platforms, with merchandise and live shows among her income sources. This illustrates how online fan relationships and touring can support an independent path; the cited account does not establish her current platform terms or account status. See TIME’s coverage.

Cuco: online discovery and self-produced releases

The Recording Academy’s 2018 profile described Cuco as label-independent at that time, building online followers around self-produced releases and performing at Coachella. That is a dated snapshot of his arrangement, not confirmation of his current label status. Read the Recording Academy profile.

Artists who used independent releases after a major-label chapter

Frank Ocean: an independent release after fulfilling an obligation

Frank Ocean’s sequence is important: the Recording Academy says he released Endless to fulfill major-label obligations, then followed it with Blonde through his own Boys Don’t Cry label. His example is a move into independent release after a major-label chapter, not an always-unsigned career. Read the Recording Academy’s account.

Ashanti: an independent company for a later-career release

After her prior deal ran its course, Ashanti established Written Entertainment with eOne Music in 2011. Her album BraveHeart debuted at No. 10 on the Billboard 200 in 2014, according to the Recording Academy’s 2018 account. This was independence in a later career phase, with a company partnership rather than a claim of having never worked with a major label. Read the Recording Academy’s report.

Independent labels—and a major-label return

Hanson: a self-owned label comeback

When major labels declined to support the band, Hanson released Underneath on its own 3CG Records in 2004. The Recording Academy’s 2018 article reports that the album produced “Penny & Me,” which reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. The case shows that an artist-owned label can provide a route back to recording and chart success when major-label backing is unavailable. Read the Recording Academy article.

Aloe Blacc: independent-label beginnings, then Interscope

Aloe Blacc’s first two albums appeared on Stones Throw Records, an independent label, before he moved to Interscope for Lift Your Spirit. His story belongs here because independent-label releases preceded a major-label deal—not because he remained outside major-label arrangements throughout his career. Read the Recording Academy’s profile.

What these careers show about independence

  • “Independent” can describe an artist-owned label, an independent label, direct or self-released music, or a later independent chapter after a major-label deal.
  • The audience routes in these examples include free mixtapes, online discovery, self-produced releases, touring, merchandise, platform-based fan relationships, promotion partnerships, and independent-label distribution.
  • The documented awards and chart positions are individual markers from specific years, not evidence that the ten artists had comparable earnings or that independence alone caused their success.
