For a first or time-limited visit, these ten British Museum highlights offer a practical route through objects that open up very different stories: deciphering ancient writing, Greek ritual and myth, medieval play, royal burial, and more. This is a curated shortlist, not an official ranking. Check the current visitor information before setting out: objects can be temporarily off display and galleries can close at short notice.

What are the must-see things at the British Museum?

The best choice depends on what you want to see: a landmark object, finely worked detail, or a quick route between nearby galleries. These ten highlights are drawn from the museum’s trails and visitor information. Room numbers below are given where the museum confirms them; check the live map for the current location of items without a room listed here.

Object What it helps you explore Location
Rosetta Stone How three scripts helped unlock Egyptian hieroglyphs Room 4
Parthenon Sculptures Greek myth and civic religious procession Room 18
Royal Game of Ur An ancient strategy game and the recovery of its rules Check current map
Oxus Treasure Achaemenid-period metalwork Room 52
Sutton Hoo ship burial finds Anglo-Saxon burial and kingship Room 41
Lewis Chessmen Medieval chess pieces carved from walrus ivory Room 40
Bust of Ramesses II, or Younger Memnon Monumental Egyptian sculpture Room 4
Sophilos Vase Greek myth and an artist’s signed work Check current map
Double-headed serpent Inlaid sculpture made in what is now Mexico Check current map
Assyrian Lion Hunt reliefs A named highlight in the Assyrian collection Room 10

Where is the Rosetta Stone, and why is it important?

The Rosetta Stone is in Room 4. It is a broken fragment of a larger stela bearing the same decree in hieroglyphic, Demotic and Ancient Greek scripts. The British Museum dates the inscriptions to 196 BC and describes the stone as a key to deciphering hieroglyphs. The museum calls it “the Museum’s most popular exhibit”; that is its own characterization, not an independently measured popularity statistic.

If you want a tactile encounter, a touchable replica is available in Room 1. The replica is a useful alternative to trying to get close to the original in a busy gallery.

What can you see in the Greek galleries?

Parthenon Sculptures — Room 18

The sculptures once decorated the Parthenon in Athens. The museum describes the pediments and metopes as scenes from Greek myth, while the frieze represents Athenians taking part in a religious procession. Look for the contrast between mythological episodes and a ceremonial scene rooted in civic life.

Sophilos Vase

This black-figure wine bowl and stand dates to around 580 BC. Its inscription, “Sophilos made me,” identifies the artist, while its imagery includes mythological scenes, among them the wedding of Peleus and Thetis. Check the current museum map for its gallery before visiting.

What should you look for in the ancient Near East galleries?

Royal Game of Ur

This is an ancient two-player strategy board game. Its rules were lost until British Museum curator Irving Finkel decoded a cuneiform tablet in the early 1980s. The museum’s visitor trail includes the game; consult the live map to confirm its current room.

Oxus Treasure — Room 52

The Oxus Treasure is a collection of gold and silver metalwork associated with the Oxus River region. The museum’s one-hour trail dates it to the Achaemenid period, from the fifth to the third century BC.

Assyrian Lion Hunt reliefs — Room 10

The museum map identifies the Assyrian Lion Hunt reliefs as a gallery highlight. Room 10 is the confirmed location; the reliefs make a natural stop for visitors following the museum’s Assyrian displays.

Which objects tell stories of burial, power and play?

Sutton Hoo ship burial finds — Room 41

The finds come from a seventh-century burial discovered undisturbed in 1939. The burial is popularly believed to have belonged to an Anglo-Saxon king, but that attribution should not be treated as certain.

Lewis Chessmen — Room 40

These chess pieces were made from walrus ivory in the twelfth century and found on the Isle of Lewis in 1831. Their individual carved figures make them a rewarding stop for close looking as well as for anyone interested in the history of games.

Which monumental and finely worked objects should you not miss?

Younger Memnon — Room 4

The bust of Ramesses II, also known as the Younger Memnon, is the monumental upper section of a statue that once stood at the Ramesseum. The British Museum’s three-hour trail gives its weight as 7.5 tonnes. Its scale makes it an especially striking companion stop to the Rosetta Stone, also in Room 4.

Double-headed serpent

This turquoise-inlaid sculpture is mounted on a wooden base and was made in what is now Mexico in the fifteenth or sixteenth century. The museum says it probably had ritual significance. Check the current map for its gallery location.

How can you see these highlights in one hour?

The museum itself labels a visitor route “One hour at the Museum.” A short visit is best treated as a selection rather than a race through every object: start with a nearby cluster, then choose one or two other highlights that matter most to you.

  1. Begin in Room 4: see the Rosetta Stone and the Younger Memnon, then visit the tactile Rosetta Stone replica in Room 1 if that would add to your visit.
  2. Choose one confirmed nearby-style stop by interest: the Lewis Chessmen are in Room 40 and the Sutton Hoo finds in Room 41; both suit visitors drawn to medieval objects, burial and social history.
  3. Add a different collection area if time allows: Room 18 holds the Parthenon Sculptures, Room 52 the Oxus Treasure, and Room 10 the Assyrian Lion Hunt reliefs.
  4. Check the live map for the rest: confirm where the Royal Game of Ur, Sophilos Vase and double-headed serpent are currently displayed before planning a route around them.

For more interpretation, the British Museum offers private guided tours for groups or individuals; check its current tour information for booking details.
