These ten destinations connect film to the things that make it: early cameras and animation, national cinema histories, practical effects, iconic designs, and the work of building a production. They are not a ranked list, and they are not all museums in the conventional sense: one is a studio tour, another is a theme-park attraction, and several focus on a particular artist or franchise.

How to choose a movie museum

For a broad history of cinema, look to the Lumière Museum in Lyon, the National Museum of Indian Cinema in Mumbai, or the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens. For the mechanics of making images, the Karel Zeman Museum offers practical effects, while the Ghibli Museum foregrounds hand-drawn animation. Fans of a particular world have more focused options in Seattle, Gruyères, and Awaji Island. The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art takes a wider view of visual storytelling, while Warner Bros. Studio Tour London is an immersive production attraction rather than a museum.

Exhibitions, schedules, prices, and booking requirements can change. Check each venue’s official visitor information before making travel plans; for entries whose details are reported by National Geographic Traveller, use its linked coverage for context and verify the current offering with the venue.

Ten destinations for film fans

1. Lucas Museum of Narrative Art — Los Angeles, United States

Opened in September 2026, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is a broad storytelling museum rather than a film-only institution. National Geographic Traveller reported more than 30 inaugural installations spanning visual storytelling across film and other image-based arts, including a “Star Wars in Motion” presentation with costumes, concept art, and vehicles. Its appeal is the chance to see film within a larger history of how images tell stories. Check the museum’s official visitor information for current exhibitions and access details. National Geographic Traveller’s September 2026 report.

  • Upgraded Material: These light-weight picture frames use upgraded plastic material, Scratch-proof and durable. And a thicker plastic cover with a protective film (prevent scratches) keeps posters better preserved. Before use, please tear off the bothside film.

  • PRECIOUS GIFT: The frame is suitable for any style of photo, such as art prints, children's artwork, Video Game, Movie posters. It is the perfect gift for your family or friends on anniversaries, weddings, birthdays, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas.
  • SECURE PACKAGE: Each frame is individually plastic sealed with corner guard and finally overall sealed to ensure safe shipping and avoid damaged. Strong collisions may cause the frame corners to separate, just simply slide the strips to get a intact poster frame again.

2. Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP) — Seattle, United States

MoPOP brings popular culture together under one roof, making it a natural stop for fans interested in the overlap between film, music, and genre storytelling. National Geographic Traveller’s September 2026 roundup highlighted “Scared to Death: The Thrill of Horror Film,” which it reported included more than 50 props and costumes from screen horror. That is a report about a particular exhibition, not a permanent collection guarantee; check MoPOP’s current exhibition listings before visiting. National Geographic Traveller’s report.

3. Ghibli Museum — Mitaka, Japan

Studio Ghibli’s museum is the strongest choice on this list for visitors who want to understand animation as hand-made craft. National Geographic Traveller describes storyboards, artists’ workspaces, hand-drawn animation, and exclusive short films shown in the Saturn Theater; a rooftop Robot Soldier adds a memorable outdoor feature. Ticketing and access procedures matter here: consult the museum’s official visitor guidance well before your trip, and do not assume walk-up admission is available. National Geographic Traveller’s description.

4. Godzilla Museum — Awaji Island, Japan

Located within the Nijigen no Mori attraction, the Godzilla Museum is a franchise-focused experience with a special-effects angle. National Geographic Traveller describes dioramas and production material exploring kaiju filmmaking, alongside an outdoor Godzilla installation. It is best understood as a theme-park destination built around one iconic monster, not as a general survey of Japanese cinema. Check Nijigen no Mori’s official visitor information for current access and attraction details. National Geographic Traveller’s report.

5. Karel Zeman Museum — Prague, Czech Republic

Filmmaker Karel Zeman’s work makes practical effects the main attraction. National Geographic Traveller describes exhibits on his films and opportunities to step into sets and try techniques such as forced perspective. That hands-on approach gives visitors a way to see how an image can create scale and illusion without relying on modern digital effects. For a wider, interactive introduction to film history in Prague, NaFilM is another option: its official site describes hands-on exhibits and workshops. The hours listed on the accessed NaFilM page were Tuesday–Friday, 13:00–19:00, and Saturday–Sunday, 10:00–19:00; confirm current hours directly before visiting. National Geographic Traveller and NaFilM’s official site.

6. Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter — Watford, United Kingdom

This is a studio tour and attraction, not a conventional museum. Its focus is production: National Geographic Traveller describes original sets, costumes, props, and demonstrations of filmmaking craft connected to the Harry Potter films. Choose it for an immersive look at how a major screen world was built, rather than for a broad history of cinema. Check the official tour website for current booking, access, and visit information. National Geographic Traveller’s report.

7. Lumière Museum — Lyon, France

The Lumière Museum occupies the family home associated with the Lumière brothers and early cinema. National Geographic Traveller connects the site to the 1895 film Workers Leaving the Lumière Factory and describes early cameras, inventions, and archival material. The nearby Hangar du Premier-Film, now a cinema, links the history on display to a place for watching films. It is a particularly strong choice for visitors interested in cinema’s beginnings and the technologies that made moving images possible. National Geographic Traveller’s report.

National Geographic Traveller notes work related to Alien, Dune, and Species. Rather than covering film history broadly, it offers a concentrated look at a distinctive visual imagination and its connection to screen worlds. Check the museum’s official site for current visitor details. National Geographic Traveller’s description.

9. National Museum of Indian Cinema — Mumbai, India

This museum broadens the picture beyond Hollywood and European film history. National Geographic Traveller describes its scope as more than a century of Indian filmmaking across regions and languages, with memorabilia, recordings, filmmaking equipment, and replicas of early moving-image devices. Its value for visitors is that it treats Indian cinema as a many-sided history, rather than a single industry or style. Confirm current access and visitor information with the museum before travelling. National Geographic Traveller’s report.

10. Museum of the Moving Image — Queens, New York City, United States

The Museum of the Moving Image covers more than cinema alone: its subject is moving images and the technologies, creative work, and culture surrounding them. Its official visitor page describes an interactive core exhibition, classic and contemporary screenings, discussions, education programs, and changing exhibitions. The page lists Thursday–Sunday opening hours and admission information, but those details can change; consult the live visitor page for current hours, tickets, and programming before setting out.

More film museums worth considering

If you are planning a longer trip or want a different emphasis, these well-supported alternatives fill out the picture:

  • Museo Nazionale del Cinema — Turin, Italy: Housed in the Mole Antonelliana, it combines cinema sets, projections, lighting effects, temporary exhibitions, a panoramic lift, and educational activities. Its official page says it is open daily except Tuesday and directs visitors to a separate page for current prices. Official museum information.
  • The Cinema Museum — London, United Kingdom: Focused on the experience of going to the cinema, its collection includes artefacts, memorabilia, and equipment, alongside events and screenings. The museum says it is fundraising to buy its current home, a notable part of its present context. Official museum information.
  • Bill Douglas Cinema Museum — Exeter, United Kingdom: The museum’s official homepage reports a collection of more than 95,000 items and public galleries, with study facilities available by appointment. It says galleries are free and open daily from 10:00 to 17:00, except during the Christmas-to-New-Year closure period; verify the current schedule before visiting. Official museum information.
  • Shawshank Museum — Mansfield, Ohio, United States: Located along the Ohio State Reformatory tour route, it features props, costumes, film locations, and a gallery connected to director Frank Darabont. The venue says admission is included with Reformatory tours and escape-room tickets. Official visitor information.
  • Academy Museum of Motion Pictures — Los Angeles, United States: Devoted to the arts, sciences, and artists of moviemaking. Its official homepage advertised a horror exhibition with nearly 350 original objects when accessed; check the museum’s current exhibition page before treating that show as a reason to visit. Official museum homepage.

Plan around the experience, not just the name

A museum’s subject can be permanent while its most memorable exhibition is temporary. Before booking transport or accommodation, check the venue’s official site for opening days, admission, advance-ticket rules, temporary exhibitions, and any access restrictions. This is especially important when a destination’s appeal depends on a particular show, as with MoPOP’s horror exhibition, or on advance visitor procedures, as at the Ghibli Museum.

Also consider what you want to take away from the visit. Early cinema and archival history are central in Lyon and Mumbai; animation craft is the draw in Mitaka; practical effects are unusually tangible in Prague; and a studio tour offers a production-focused experience in Watford. Matching the venue to that interest will make a more useful itinerary than treating every stop as the same kind of museum.
