Richard Attenborough’s Kris Kringle in Miracle on 34th Street (1994) is the greatest movie Santa: warm, reassuring and convincing enough to make belief feel possible even in a courtroom. Edmund Gwenn’s original Kris Kringle, from the 1947 film, is a close second—and the only performance in this ranking with an Oscar win specifically associated with playing Santa, as reported by TheWrap.

This is a ranking of screen performances, not a claim of consensus. Critics disagree about both the order and whether a character in a Santa suit counts. The list weighs warmth and credibility, performance and character arc, originality, and how much the film depends on its Santa.

How the ranking works

“Greatest” can mean the most believable traditional Santa, the most distinctive comic invention, or the performance that carries the film. These choices give each a place in the ranking without treating every character in a red suit as the same kind of Santa.

  • Warmth and credibility: Does the actor make the magical figure emotionally plausible?
  • Performance and character arc: Does the role reveal or change something?
  • Originality: Does the portrayal refresh, subvert or reinvent the familiar image?
  • Narrative centrality: How much of the film’s appeal rests on this Santa?

The 10 greatest movie Santas

1. Richard Attenborough — Miracle on 34th Street (1994)

Attenborough’s Kris Kringle is the best all-around screen Santa: genial without being sugary, and convincing without needing to explain away the magic. The character’s calm certainty gives the film its emotional center, including when the question of his identity reaches court. The Guardian’s 2018 ranking praises the appeal of this avuncular figure, while The Independent calls him a quintessential cinema Santa in its authenticity-focused list.

2. Edmund Gwenn — Miracle on 34th Street (1947)

Gwenn’s original Kris Kringle is the benchmark Attenborough’s version inherits: kindly, quietly self-possessed and able to move between the Macy’s parade, a child’s belief and a courtroom hearing without losing credibility. TheWrap’s 2021 overview puts him first, and JustWatch’s US guide to Santa movies places him second. Gwenn won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for the film; on accepting it, he said, “Now I know there’s a Santa Claus,” as recorded by Turner Classic Movies.

3. Ed Asner — Elf (2003)

Asner plays Santa as a competent operator who still has room for wonder—and a little impatience. That managerial steadiness suits a story in which Buddy’s exuberance threatens to overwhelm the ordinary world around him. The Independent highlights Asner’s physical fit for the role; JustWatch notes the balance of magic and believable management. His Santa is a supporting presence, but a sturdy one: the film needs him to make Buddy’s belief feel more than a joke.

4. Tim Allen — The Santa Clause (1994)

Allen’s Scott Calvin begins as a skeptical, ordinary father and becomes Santa through the film’s central transformation. That arc gives the performance its advantage over portrayals that arrive fully formed: viewers see the disbelief, the reluctant adjustment and the growing tenderness. TheWrap describes the change from cynical to sweet, while the Independent notes that Allen’s Santa anchors a franchise.

5. Kurt Russell — The Christmas Chronicles (2018)

Russell trades the traditional plush image for leather-jacket swagger, charisma and comic confidence. The Guardian and the Independent both single out the rock-and-roll edge; JustWatch describes him as cool and funny. The reinvention works because it changes the surface of Santa without discarding his purpose: Russell’s version still has to deliver Christmas, just with more attitude.

6. David Huddleston — Santa Claus: The Movie (1985)

Huddleston brings earthy jollity to a traditional Santa in a film devoted to the character’s origins and the mechanics of his operation. That emphasis gives the performance a different appeal from the courtroom idealism of Miracle on 34th Street or the transformation in The Santa Clause: this is a Santa built for a full-scale origin story. The Guardian praises Huddleston’s geniality, and the Independent notes the film’s focus on how Santa’s world works.

7. Billy Bob Thornton — Bad Santa (2003)

Thornton is memorable precisely because this is not a true magical Santa: he plays a criminal using the costume as part of a con. The abrasive performance turns seasonal goodwill into dark comedy, making him the ranking’s clearest anti-Santa. The Guardian and JustWatch both praise its comic force. His inclusion depends on judging distinctive screen performances, not on restricting the list to benevolent figures.

8. Jim Broadbent — Get Santa (2014)

Broadbent’s Santa crash-lands and winds up in jail, a setup that lets the actor play the figure as both vulnerable and warmly comic. The Guardian finds him especially cuddly in prison clothes as well as full regalia. The Independent is less enthusiastic, an apt reminder that a ranking based on performance and tone will not produce universal agreement.

9. Alec Baldwin — Rise of the Guardians (2012)

This animated Saint Nick is an action hero: Russian-accented, tattooed and armed with dual sabres. The Guardian’s description makes the contrast with a familiar, gentle Santa unmistakable. Baldwin’s performance earns its spot for originality rather than traditional credibility; the film imagines Santa as a protector who can hold his own in a fantasy adventure.

10. Bill Nighy — Arthur Christmas (2011)

Nighy voices Santa Sr, a standout supporting figure in an animated film whose principal Santa is voiced by Jim Broadbent. The distinction matters: Nighy is not the central Santa of the story, but the Guardian singles out his performance. His place here recognizes how a sharply drawn supporting Santa can add comic character without carrying the whole film.

Why rankings of movie Santas differ

The Guardian and The Independent both rank Attenborough first, and JustWatch also places him at the top; TheWrap instead leads with Gwenn and explicitly excludes characters merely pretending to be Santa. The disagreement reflects different definitions, not a settled public verdict. If “best” means the most credible traditional figure, Attenborough and Gwenn are the strongest choices. If originality counts as much as authenticity, Thornton’s con man, Russell’s rocker and Baldwin’s action-oriented Saint Nick belong in the conversation too.

Other defensible choices include José Elías Moreno in Santa Claus (1959), John Call in Santa Claus Conquers the Martians (1964), Douglas Seale in Ernest Saves Christmas (1988), Gene Hackman in The French Connection (1971) and Richard Riehle in A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas (2011). Their range—from traditional to comic, supporting to unexpected—shows why the boundaries of a Santa ranking matter.
