What are the greatest movies of the 1990s? There is no definitive answer, but these ten films make a persuasive case through their craft, influence, performances and range. This is a critical ranking—not a poll or scientific measure—and it balances Hollywood landmarks with international cinema and distinct genres.

How this ranking works

“Masterpiece” is a judgment, not a measurable category. The British Film Institute makes a similar point about its selection of 90 films from the decade: it says there is “no scientific method” behind the choices and that the list is not a Sight & Sound poll. Its purpose is to highlight favorites from around the world. This ranking likewise weighs direction and form, lasting recognition and influence, distinctive performances or visual language, and how well each film represents a significant current in 1990s cinema.

The order is editorial. One composite ranking from History of Movies, which says it combines more than 20 lists, awards and polls, puts Goodfellas first, Schindler’s List second and Pulp Fiction third. That is a useful cross-list signal, not a universal verdict. The selection below also makes room for international filmmaking and animation.

The 10 greatest movie masterpieces of the ’90s

  1. Goodfellas (1990)

Martin Scorsese’s crime film turns the rise and unraveling of a mob associate into a propulsive study of appetite, loyalty and consequence. Its kinetic camera, sharp editing and precise shifts in tone make the world feel intoxicating before revealing its costs. The BFI describes the film’s influence on the mob-movie genre as transformative; it also leads the History of Movies composite ranking.

  2. Schindler’s List (1993)

Steven Spielberg’s Holocaust drama follows German industrialist Oskar Schindler as he uses his factory and influence to save Jewish workers from Nazi persecution. Its stark black-and-white imagery and intimate focus on individual lives give the story emotional force without losing sight of the historical horror. It ranks second in the History of Movies composite, but its place here rests on the film’s filmmaking and enduring weight, not that position alone.

  3. Pulp Fiction (1994)

Quentin Tarantino’s interlocking crime stories reshaped the decade’s popular film language with nonlinear structure, digressive dialogue and abrupt shifts between comedy and violence. Tarantino described his ambition as making it “look like an epic,” an ambition the film pursues through invention and scope rather than conventional scale. TIME’s retrospective records the director’s comment and places the film’s second-feature status in context. Pulp Fiction is third in the History of Movies composite.

  4. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

Frank Darabont’s prison drama follows Andy Dufresne through years of confinement, friendship and quiet resistance. Its measured storytelling builds toward a deeply satisfying payoff, while its central relationship gives the story warmth without diminishing the cruelty of prison life. The film’s inclusion in the History of Movies ranked set supports its place among the decade’s enduring popular dramas.

  5. Toy Story (1995)

John Lasseter’s feature-length computer-animated film made a new visual medium serve a timeless story about jealousy, friendship and the fear of being replaced. The toys’ expressive performances and the clean emotional arc keep the technical novelty from becoming the point: the innovation matters because it opens up a convincing world and a relatable conflict. Its presence in the History of Movies ranked set reflects animation’s importance to the decade’s cinema.

  6. The Piano (1993)

Jane Campion’s drama centers on Ada, a mute Scottish pianist sent to New Zealand with her daughter and her piano. The film’s landscapes, controlled compositions and attention to gesture make desire and power legible beyond spoken dialogue. Its place among the composite ranking’s later entries recognizes a work whose formal precision and emotional intensity differ sharply from the decade’s Hollywood blockbusters.

  7. Unforgiven (1992)

Clint Eastwood’s revisionist Western revisits the myths of the gunfighter through an aging former killer drawn back into violence. Rather than romanticizing the old West, it asks what killing does to the people who perform it and those who celebrate it. Its inclusion among the composite ranking’s later entries reflects its standing as a major rethinking of a foundational American genre.

  8. The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

Jonathan Demme’s psychological thriller follows FBI trainee Clarice Starling as she seeks help from imprisoned serial killer Hannibal Lecter to catch another murderer. Its taut procedural structure is matched by a charged, carefully composed series of encounters, with Jodie Foster’s focused performance anchoring the film’s shifting power dynamics. The composite ranking includes it among the decade’s notable films.

  9. Taste of Cherry (1997)

Abbas Kiarostami’s Iranian film follows a man driving around Tehran as he searches for someone willing to help him after his planned suicide. Long stretches of conversation and spare, patient images invite viewers to sit with uncertainty rather than resolve it quickly. Its presence in the composite ranking helps widen this list beyond English-language studio cinema and makes room for a radically different mode of storytelling.

  10. Beau Travail (1999)

Claire Denis’s film follows French Foreign Legionnaires in Djibouti, using physical routine, landscape and charged silences to build a story of discipline, jealousy and desire. Its expressive bodies and elliptical form make mood and movement as important as plot. The composite ranking includes it among its selections, and it closes this list with an example of the decade’s adventurous international cinema.

Why the order is debatable

A list of ten cannot represent every major film from a decade as stylistically and geographically varied as the 1990s. The sources support these titles as credible contenders, not as a mandatory top ten. A different ranking might elevate another film, favor a particular national cinema, or give more weight to popular impact than formal experimentation. The aim here is to make the choices visible: landmark direction, memorable craft and performances, lasting influence, and a meaningful spread across genres and filmmaking traditions.
