There is no official all-time ranking of claymation films. This list is an editorial ranking based on the expressiveness of the animation, the strength of the story and its comedy or emotion, cultural recognition, and how well each film rewards its intended audience. It includes both features and shorts, clearly labeled, rather than filling the list with stop-motion films made primarily from other materials.

Claymation is a kind of stop motion: adjustable clay characters are moved between photographs, which play in sequence to create the illusion of motion. Stop motion is the broader category, so a film’s use of stop-motion animation alone does not make it claymation. Guinness World Records’ definition and Rotten Tomatoes’ broader stop-motion guide help clarify the distinction.

10 greatest claymation movies, ranked

The list draws on Aardman’s documented feature-film slate and adds two celebrated shorts to make ten entries. Aardman and Guinness identify eight Aardman claymation features; that record is a useful candidate pool, not a quality ranking. The order below is this article’s judgment, not an official or source-endorsed result.

1. The Wrong Trousers (1993) — short

Nick Park’s Oscar-winning Wallace & Gromit short is the most concentrated showcase here of clay’s comic potential. BFI highlights its dry humor, the sinister penguin Feathers McGraw, and the train-chase finale; it also notes the visible fingerprints that make the clay feel handmade rather than polished into anonymity. Its short runtime is an advantage: the story moves briskly from domestic oddity to ingenious suspense. BFI’s discussion of the film places it in critical context, while the official Wallace & Gromit film catalog lists it among the franchise’s films.

2. Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005) — feature

The duo’s feature-length outing turns their small-scale inventions and deadpan partnership into a playful mystery about a vegetable-threatening beast. It earns its high place for combining a coherent story with meticulous physical comedy and a distinctly British comic sensibility. Aardman reported that 2,844.9 kg (6,272 lb) of clay was used in the film in its 7 August 2025 announcement; that is the studio’s stated record figure, not an independently audited measurement here. The official catalog includes the film.

3. Chicken Run (2000) — feature

A prison-break adventure set on a chicken farm, Chicken Run makes ensemble timing and clear, expressive character animation serve a sharply defined escape story. Its broad comic appeal and suspenseful set pieces make it an especially strong starting point for viewers who want a feature rather than a short. Aardman’s record list includes it among the studio’s claymation features.

4. Shaun the Sheep Movie (2015) — feature

Shaun’s silent, visual-comedy style proves that a feature can sustain its story with little dialogue. The film’s charm depends on readable expressions, physical gags, and escalating misunderstandings rather than exposition. Rotten Tomatoes’ stop-motion guide, updated 25 July 2024, displayed a 99% Tomatometer score for it at that time; that is a dated review-aggregate snapshot, not a claymation-only ranking or a permanent measure of quality. Rotten Tomatoes’ guide covers stop motion broadly.

5. A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon (2019) — feature

This sequel keeps Shaun’s visual humor while adding a science-fiction visitor and a larger adventure. Its appeal is strongest for viewers who enjoy the first film’s largely wordless storytelling and want a more fantastical variation on it. It is one of the eight Aardman features named in the studio’s record list.

6. Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl (2024) — feature

Feathers McGraw returns in a feature-length Wallace & Gromit story, making this a particularly rewarding pick for viewers familiar with the franchise’s shorts. Its place here reflects the strength of that character-driven comic world and the film’s connection to the series’ clay-animation legacy. Aardman’s 2025 announcement lists it among the studio’s eight claymation features. The official Wallace & Gromit catalog provides the franchise’s film listings.

7. The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists (2012) — feature

Known in some overseas markets as The Pirates! Band of Misfits, this adventure sends an inept pirate captain and his crew into a comic contest for recognition. Its busy ensemble, visual gags, and intentionally ridiculous premise make it a lively choice for audiences who prefer broad adventure comedy. The alternate title reflects release-market naming, not a separate film.

8. Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget (2023) — feature

The sequel moves the story from escape to rescue, giving the returning characters a new mission and a different kind of danger. It is a natural follow-up for viewers who want more of the original film’s world, though its strongest appeal is likely to come from franchise familiarity.

9. Early Man (2018) — feature

A prehistoric football comedy, Early Man pairs Aardman’s broad physical humor with an underdog sports-story structure. Its unusual setting and silly rivalry offer variety in a list otherwise led by recurring franchise characters. Viewers looking for a familiar Aardman tone in a standalone story may find it the best fit.

10. The Wrong Trousers’ predecessor: A Grand Day Out (1989) — short

Wallace and Gromit’s first screen adventure sends them to the moon in search of cheese. Its handmade look and ingenious premise make it an essential piece of the pair’s screen history, even if its compact early storytelling is less polished than the later short at the top of this ranking. It is a short, not a feature film.

What counts as claymation—and what does not?

Claymation specifically refers to stop-motion animation using adjustable clay characters; stop motion itself includes many materials and approaches. The distinction matters because broad “best stop-motion” lists often include films made primarily with puppets or other materials. Rotten Tomatoes’ guide, for example, covers stop motion generally and includes The Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline. Those examples should not be labeled claymation solely because they are stop-motion films.

For this ranking, Aardman’s eight-feature record list provides the feature-length core. Guinness listed eight studio claymation features as of 10 January 2025, and Aardman’s announcement dated 7 August 2025 likewise names eight. The two additional entries here are explicitly identified as shorts: The Wrong Trousers, which BFI describes as an Oscar-winning Wallace & Gromit short, and A Grand Day Out.

How to choose a starting point

  • For a compact introduction: Watch The Wrong Trousers for tightly built comic suspense, or A Grand Day Out to see Wallace and Gromit’s earlier adventure.
  • For family-friendly feature comedy: Start with Chicken Run or Shaun the Sheep Movie.
  • For inventive mystery and visual detail: Choose The Curse of the Were-Rabbit.
  • For a sequel or returning characters: Try Farmageddon, Dawn of the Nugget, or Vengeance Most Fowl if you already know their respective worlds.
  • For the broadest stop-motion sampler: Explore other stop-motion films too, but check their materials and methods rather than assuming they are claymation.

Sources and ranking context

The Guinness World Records entry defines claymation and records eight Aardman feature films as of 10 January 2025. Aardman’s 7 August 2025 announcement names the same eight features and reports the clay-use figure for The Curse of the Were-Rabbit. Neither source presents an all-time quality ranking. BFI’s stop-motion list offers critical context for The Wrong Trousers, while Rotten Tomatoes’ guide is a broad stop-motion collection ordered by Tomatometer rather than a clay-only consensus.
