If most of your comic-book knowledge comes from blockbuster films and headline superheroes, these ten characters may be new to you. They range from a mischievous Batman fan to a cosmic warrior and a superhero identity shared across generations. This is a discovery list, not a ranking or a claim that any character is objectively obscure.
Ten characters worth discovering
1. Bat-Mite (DC)
Bat-Mite is an imp who believes he helped make Batman successful. In DC’s description, he now tries to improve other heroes’ careers—a comic premise that turns a fan’s overconfidence into a source of trouble and comedy.
For a documented reading entry point, DC’s 2015 BAT-MITE graphic novel collects stories from the six-issue miniseries. Dan Jurgens wrote it and Corin Howell illustrated it; the featured cast includes Hawkman, Booster Gold, Batman, and Superman. See DC’s edition details.
2. Blue Beetle (DC): Jaime Reyes
Blue Beetle is a legacy identity, not just one character. DC identifies three men who have carried the name: Dan Garrett, Ted Kord, and Jaime Reyes. This entry focuses on Jaime, a later holder of the mantle, rather than treating the three as interchangeable.

There is a wrinkle in the official profile: it gives Jaime Reyes’s first appearance as Mystery Men Comics #1 (1939), while also noting the identity’s presence in DC’s superhero community since 1939. Because the name has multiple bearers, that date should not be read as the first appearance of Jaime Reyes himself. Read DC’s Blue Beetle profile.
3. Beta-Ray Bill (Marvel)
Beta-Ray Bill is a Marvel character connected to Thor’s corner of the universe, but his presence is not limited to one Thor series. Marvel’s official comics catalog lists Beta Ray Bill (2021), Immortal Thor, and Thor (1966–1996) among related reading paths. Those listings confirm places to explore the character, but do not establish a single best first issue or collected edition.

4. A note on finding other discoveries
Marvel’s official character directory is a searchable catalog of thousands of characters, useful for checking official names and finding candidates beyond the best-known heroes. A character’s presence in the directory does not show how famous or unfamiliar that character is.

“You might not know” depends on what someone reads, watches, and follows. These examples are selected for their distinct premises and publication contexts, not as a definitive top ten or a measurable ranking of obscurity. A first-appearance date can help trace a character’s history, but it does not by itself establish the character’s significance or tell you which edition is currently available.
