These ten soundtracks span chiptune, ambient electronics, acoustic textures, and orchestral writing, so the right pick depends on what you want to hear. This is a curated listening guide, not a definitive ranking: “indie” has a fuzzy boundary, and the label has grown less useful as the field has expanded, as Bandcamp Daily noted in 2025.
10 indie game soundtracks worth hearing
The order below is for easy reading, not a scorecard. Each recommendation offers a different musical palette or way of supporting a game’s atmosphere.
-
Celeste — Lena Raine
Raine’s score follows an emotional arc that tracks the game’s climb, from the early momentum of “First Steps” to the tension of “Confronting Myself” and the release of “Reach for the Summit.” The Steam soundtrack listing credits Raine as artist and composer and lists the album’s release date as June 21, 2019. It also records major recognition: the 2018 ASCAP Composers’ Choice Award for Video Game Score of the Year, a 2019 GDC Choice Award for Best Audio, a 2019 BAFTA Games Awards nomination for Best Music, and a 2018 The Game Awards nomination for Best Music/Score.
-
Hollow Knight — Christopher Larkin
Larkin’s score begins with restrained piano and broadens toward orchestral scale as the kingdom’s story unfolds. That gradual expansion makes it a strong choice for listeners who like exploration music that can become weightier without abandoning atmosphere. Steam’s official soundtrack listing credits Larkin and describes this progression.

Korb blends acoustic and electronic elements into a score that gives Bastion a distinctive, handmade-feeling musical identity. Try it if you want a sound that sits between organic instrumentation and game-like electronics.
Rank #2
-
Transistor — Darren Korb
Where Bastion balances acoustic and electronic colors, Transistor leans into a more electronic and orchestral combination. GamesRadar has described its style as “Old-world Electronic Post-rock”; that phrase is the publication’s characterization, not a composer quote. It suits a listener looking for a more stylized, layered sound.
-
Journey — Austin Wintory
Wintory’s orchestral and electronic blend is closely associated with the game’s wide-open exploration and sense of discovery. It is a good choice when you want a score that feels expansive and emotionally focused rather than rhythmically aggressive.

More soundtracks to try
If you prefer a cozy, upbeat mood to the ten picks above, Stardew Valley is a worthwhile alternative. Its seasonal themes and relaxed character offer a different listening experience. Darren Korb’s work also extends beyond Bastion and Transistor to Hades and Hades II, making those games natural next stops if you want to explore his range.
Hades — Darren Korb, with vocals by Ashley Barrett
Supergiant Games’ official Bandcamp album page describes the Hades soundtrack as two and a half hours of music, with additional vocals by Ashley Barrett and a remaster presented for standalone listening. Selected pieces were recorded with orchestral accompaniment at Abbey Road Studios. The album was released on September 18, 2020.
Where to listen and how to find vinyl
For digital listening or purchase, the Celeste soundtrack is listed as downloadable additional content on Steam, while Hades is available as an album through Supergiant Games’ Bandcamp. Indie game soundtrack vinyl is also a real collecting category: specialist retailers such as Fangamer and iam8bit carry game soundtracks, and boutique labels have issued limited-edition pressings. Availability changes, so check the exact title, edition, pressing, and current stock rather than assuming a particular record is available.
