Akira Toriyama died on March 1, 2024; the first anniversary of his death fell on March 1, 2025. His passing marked the loss of Dragon Ball’s creator, but it did not bring the entire franchise to an end: Toei Animation announced new Dragon Ball Super anime projects in 2026. Those announcements do not, however, answer every question about the manga or the future of each adaptation.
When did Akira Toriyama die?
Toriyama died on March 1, 2024, from acute subdural hematoma, according to Shueisha’s official notice, published on March 8, 2024. The notice came a week after his death. The first anniversary was March 1, 2025. Read Shueisha’s notice on MANGA Plus.
Did Dragon Ball end with Toriyama’s death?
No—not as a franchise. Toriyama’s death was a profound loss, but the broad claim that the Dragon Ball saga has ended is contradicted by official anime announcements made afterward. That does not mean every Dragon Ball work will continue, or that Toriyama’s role in each future project is the same; it means the franchise itself has not simply stopped.
Toei Animation described Dragon Ball as a manga launched in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1984. In a September 2024 release, Toei Animation USA reported that the series had sold 260 million copies worldwide. That is the sales figure published in that particular 2024 release, not a current total. Toei Animation USA’s Dragon Ball DAIMA announcement.

Which Dragon Ball projects were announced after the anniversary?
Dragon Ball Super: Beerus
Toei announced Dragon Ball Super: Beerus in 2026, describing it as a new beginning for the anime and setting its debut for fall 2026. See Toei Animation’s announcement.
Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol
Toei also announced production of Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol in 2026. The announcement establishes that the project is in production; it does not by itself establish a release date. See Toei Animation’s production announcement.

The two announcements show that official Dragon Ball anime projects continued to be developed after Toriyama’s death. They do not establish the current publication status or continuation plans for the Dragon Ball Super manga, nor do they settle the status of every adaptation. Anime announcements should not be treated as evidence of what is happening with the manga.
Toriyama’s legacy and the franchise’s continuation are related, but they are not the same question. His death ended his life and creative work; it did not, by itself, end every story or project carrying the Dragon Ball name.
