No—Joe Goldberg survives the finale of You. Bronte shoots him during their final confrontation, but police arrest him, and the series ends with him facing life in prison.
What happens to Joe in the finale?
Joe survives both the fire at Mooney’s and his final confrontation with Bronte. In the basement, Kate records Joe confessing to the murders of Love and Tom Lockwood and sends the recording to Nadia. Bronte rescues Joe from the fire, but her reason is to pursue justice for Guinevere Beck—not to resume their relationship. Netflix Tudum’s May 1, 2025 finale explainer recounts the events.
Joe mistakes the escape from Mooney’s for the beginning of a future with Bronte. She intends instead to make him erase the manuscript he wrote about Beck. After his son Henry rejects him, Joe’s romantic fantasy collapses and he attacks Bronte. As police arrive, she has a gun. Joe begs her to kill him, believing prison would be worse than death; when he tries to wrest the gun away, she shoots him in the penis. He survives and is taken into custody.
Does Joe go to prison?
Yes. The show’s final account is that Joe is arrested and will spend the rest of his life in prison. The closing scene shows him behind bars reading a fan letter. Rather than take responsibility, he blames his circumstances and shifts blame to the people who write to him.

Co-showrunner Michael Foley said the ending was meant to leave Joe unchanged: “We knew we wanted to end with Joe having not changed. That was the most important thing.” He described the final moment as “One final deflection.” The scene presents imprisonment as punishment, not as evidence that Joe has learned or repented. Netflix Tudum’s interview and ending explanation attributes those remarks to Foley.

The ending treats Joe’s survival and imprisonment as a harsher consequence than a quick death: he must live with the loss of freedom and the control he has repeatedly pursued. Foley put it simply: “Death would be too easy.”

Penn Badgley, who plays Joe, explained the distinction between punishment and revenge: “Somebody killing Joe wouldn’t be justice. It would be vengeance.” The finale follows that distinction: Bronte wounds Joe, but leaves him for the police rather than killing him. Both statements appear in Netflix Tudum’s May 1, 2025 ending interview.
