In the final scene, Joe reads fan mail and turns his accusation outward, suggesting that people who romanticize him share responsibility for his appeal. Co-showrunner Michael Foley described the monologue as “One final deflection.” The show’s official finale explainer says Joe remains unrepentant, while TheWrap’s interview with co-showrunners Justin W. Lo and Foley says the creators wanted Bronte—not Joe—to hold the last narrative authority after his arrest.
Who is Bronte, and why does she get close to Joe?
Bronte is an assumed identity. She is Louise Flannery, a former student of Beck’s. After reading Beck’s novel, The Dark Face of Love, Louise notices details that do not seem to fit Beck and joins an online group trying to identify her killer. She moves close to Joe under the name Bronte as part of that investigation.

Netflix’s account of the finale describes how Bronte’s feelings for Joe complicate her pursuit of justice. Her role is not simply that of a new romantic obsession: her connection to Beck gives the season’s ending a direct link to Joe’s first known victim.
How does the season lead to Joe’s arrest?
Joe returns to New York apparently settled into a wealthy life with his wife, Kate, and their son, Henry. His attraction to Bronte reignites his familiar pattern of romantic obsession. Meanwhile, Kate, Nadia, and Marienne work together to expose him.
Joe escapes their cage. During the fire at Mooney’s, he confesses to killing Love and Kate’s father. Kate records the confession and sends it to Nadia. Bronte rescues Joe from the fire, but the escape does not become the new life he imagines: after Henry rejects him and Joe turns violent toward Bronte, she shoots him and police take him into custody. Netflix’s final-season explainer recounts the confession, escape, and arrest.
Why does Joe go to prison instead of dying?
The creators chose capture and confinement over a fatal ending. Penn Badgley, who plays Joe, put the distinction plainly: “Somebody killing Joe wouldn’t be justice. It would be vengeance.” Foley also said, “Death would be too easy.” Both statements appear in Netflix Tudum’s May 1, 2025 finale explainer.

- Masterpiece: All Creatures Great and Small
Prison removes Joe’s freedom without suggesting that another person’s violence has settled the account. His closing attempt to blame the people drawn to his image also refuses a clean redemption: he is still shaping a story that excuses him. TheWrap’s April 25, 2025 interview discusses the creative decision to let Bronte, rather than Joe, have the final narrative authority.
Does the series diagnose Joe’s violence?
No real-world diagnosis is established by the finale. Season 5 gives Joe an account of his childhood, including his parents, as an explanation for his violence. The creators describe this as a late attempt to approach a psychological account of the character; the series had generally avoided diagnosing him. It is best understood as Joe’s explanation and the writers’ framing, not a clinical assessment.
Rank #4
- The fifth season of Outlander sees a continuation of Claire and Jamie?s fight to protect those they love, as they navigate the trials and tribulations of life in colonial America.
How many episodes are in season 5, and where can you watch it?
Season 5 is the fifth and final season, with ten episodes. Netflix released all ten on April 24, 2025, according to its season announcement and guide.
