In a June 27, 2024, CBS Mornings interview with Gayle King, Costner described deadlines and commitments, and said “’Yellowstone’ was my first priority.” Those comments are his account of the situation, not a complete independent record of private negotiations. He also said he would consider returning if the story and role appealed to him.

Reports and speculation have discussed tensions involving co-creator Taylor Sheridan, but the available accounts do not establish a feud as the definitive reason Costner left. Nor is there a verified statement from Sheridan in these sources explaining why the writers chose this precise fate for John. The clearest distinction is that John’s death explains the character’s absence on screen, while Costner’s public comments address his decision not to continue.
