“Won’t Eat Mysore Pak Unless It’s Renamed Mysore India”: How Hypernationalism Fed Twitter Humour

A 2016 joke about renaming Mysore Pak “Mysore India” parodied calls to boycott products over national associations. Scroll.in situated it amid India–Pakistan tensions and reported no measured evidence of a real-world sweet boycott.

A 2016 joke about refusing to eat Mysore Pak unless it was renamed “Mysore India” turned boycott rhetoric on its head: the sweet’s name contains “Pak,” but Scroll.in described it as a confection associated with Mysore, not Pakistan. The quip appeared amid calls to boycott Pakistani products and artists, using the logic of those calls to make the politics look absurd.

Why did Mysore Pak become part of a boycott joke?

Scroll.in’s October 21, 2016 report placed the joke in a period of strained India–Pakistan relations following the Uri militant attack and India’s reported surgical strikes along the Line of Control. The report said 19 Indian Army soldiers were killed in the attack; that figure and the surrounding account are Scroll.in’s reporting.

At the time, the report said, calls were circulating in India to boycott Chinese and Pakistani products, as well as Pakistani actors including Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan. The Mysore Pak line borrowed the form of a boycott demand, then applied it to a sweet whose name only seemed to fit the target because of the syllable “Pak.”

What was the joke about the sweet’s name?

Scroll.in described Mysore Pak as a ghee-soaked sweet first prepared in Mysore Palace during the reign of Krishna Raja Wadiyar IV. In its account, “Mysore” refers to the place and “pak” comes from a Kannada word for a sweet concoction. The headline’s proposed renaming—“Mysore India”—therefore deliberately mistakes a word in the sweet’s name for a national label.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The joke’s punchline is not a genuine proposal to rename the dessert. It exposes how a boycott based on names can become indiscriminate or ridiculous when applied without regard to what a name actually means.

Which other foods were drawn into the jokes?

Scroll.in also named Karachi Bakery, Lahori namak (salt), Sindhi kadhi and Peshawari biryani as foods whose names prompted boycott jokes. The report noted a naming parallel: a Bombay Bakery in Hyderabad, Pakistan. These examples made the same basic point as the Mysore Pak quip—place names and cultural associations can cross borders, and a name alone does not establish the identity or politics of a product.

How did the humour connect to the debate over Pakistani artists?

The food jokes appeared alongside a dispute over Pakistani performers working in India. Scroll.in reported that the Indian Motion Picture Producers Association had barred Pakistani actors and technicians from shooting in India until “normalcy” returned. It also described a threat by the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena against Pakistani artists and a video by filmmaker Karan Johar saying he loved India and would not work with Pakistani artists. Some users, according to the report, used the Mysore Pak joke to mock Johar’s capitulation.

Did the jokes lead to a real boycott?

Scroll.in predicted that calls to boycott the sweets were unlikely to be heeded. The report did not provide figures for how many posts circulated, how many people saw them, or whether consumer behaviour changed. It documents a moment of online humour, not a measured public campaign or its effects. Nor does the available account establish that the original posts remain accessible.

What the headline captures

“Won’t eat Mysore Pak unless it’s re-named Mysore India” compresses the episode into one line: a political boycott impulse meets a familiar sweet and becomes parody. Its target is the urge to treat a suggestive name as proof of allegiance—a logic that, pushed far enough, could make even a Mysore sweet suspect.
