Its farmhouse premise has genuine spooky potential, but Rotten Tomatoes’ critic consensus argues that the film’s increasingly prominent metaphor limits the scares and surprises. The tension between atmosphere and explanation is the key to whether it works for you.
What is The Woman in the Yard about?
Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and written by Sam Stefanak, the 2025 horror-thriller follows Ramona, a mother grieving her husband’s death. A mysterious woman appears outside the family farmhouse and draws closer, forcing Ramona to protect her children. That setup is best approached with as little plot knowledge as possible.

Is it actually spooky?
The premise puts dread close to home: a strange figure stands outside, while a grieving parent must keep her family safe. The film’s strongest appeal, in the available critical framing, is that unnerving situation and Deadwyler’s performance. Rotten Tomatoes’ critic consensus describes the movie as having “plenty of spooky promise” and praises Deadwyler’s committed work.

That promise does not necessarily translate into sustained scares. The same consensus says the story’s heavy-handed metaphor leaves little room for scares or surprise. In other words, the film’s central idea can become more conspicuous than its mystery. Viewers who enjoy horror that makes its themes explicit may find that emphasis effective; those who want ambiguity and escalating shocks may find it restrictive. Rotten Tomatoes
What should viewers know before watching?
- Tone: A short, PG-13 horror-thriller built around grief, a farmhouse, and an unexplained visitor.
- Performance: Deadwyler’s portrayal of Ramona is a major part of the film’s appeal.
- Content: The official rating descriptors include suicide-related content, terror, some violent content and bloody images, and brief strong language.
- Expectation: Its critical reception points to atmospheric potential, but also to a metaphor that may feel too prominent for viewers seeking surprise-driven scares.
