Is Touch worth watching if you like romantic dramas? Yes—if you’re drawn to reflective, earnest stories that let a relationship unfold across decades. Its emotional directness is part of the appeal, but the unhurried pace may test viewers looking for brisk plotting.
What is Touch about?
Directed by Baltasar Kormákur, Touch stars Egill Ólafsson, Kōki and Pálmi Kormákur. Its central story follows a widower searching for his first love, who disappeared 50 years earlier, as time becomes a pressing concern. The film was released theatrically in the United States on July 12, 2024, and carries an R rating there, according to Focus Features’ release announcement.
The narrative moves between older Kristofer’s search and memories of his younger self meeting Miko. Those threads take the story across Iceland, England and Japan. Focus Features describes the film as intimate in its emotional focus but expansive in its historical setting; that is the distributor’s framing, rather than a claim that the film is a conventional historical epic. Kormákur discusses the story’s structure and scope in the filmmaker interview.
What works—and what may not
An emotionally direct romance
The film’s strongest fit is for viewers who want romance to be sincere and central, rather than ironic or incidental. The Guardian called it an “unashamedly emotional love story” and described the romance as straightforward, rooted in a clandestine relationship in 1960s London and interrupted by family obligations. That is one critic’s assessment, not a universal verdict. Read The Guardian’s review.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A leisurely pace is a real caveat
Moving between a present-day search and memories across different places gives the story room to linger, but it also means the film may feel slow to viewers who prefer momentum and frequent plot turns. Audience comments surfaced on Rotten Tomatoes reflect differing reactions: some praise the acting and emotional story, while others object to the pacing. They are examples of audience responses, not evidence of a measured consensus. See the Rotten Tomatoes page for Touch.
As a recommendation, Touch is a good match for a patient viewer seeking a reflective romance across decades. If you want a fast-moving love story or tend to resist overt sentiment, its approach may not be for you.

How does the film relate to the novel?
Touch adapts the novel by Ólafur Jóhann Ólafsson, published in the United States by Ecco/HarperCollins in August 2022, according to Focus Features’ film page. Kormákur said that reading the novel, “I realized this was the love story that I had been looking for.” Ólafsson, who co-wrote the screenplay, described the adaptation as faithful to what matters in the book. Those are the filmmakers’ own views; they do not establish a scene-by-scene comparison. Ólafsson discusses adapting his novel.
Readers curious about the source story can look for Ólafsson’s Touch. The film and book are connected, but the available statements do not detail specific changes to characterization, structure or ending.
