This is a curated selection, not a definitive ranking—published lists differ in both their choices and their order.
Why these cars feel like movie stars
A great screen car can do a job no ordinary prop can: announce a character, enable an impossible escape or become so closely tied to a film that its silhouette calls the story to mind. The ten below stand out for those different kinds of screen presence. Their order is editorial, not a universal measure of greatness.
Ten cars with a starring role
1. Aston Martin DB5 — Goldfinger (1964)
James Bond’s DB5 is a signature car because its gadgets are part of the character’s screen identity. The International Spy Museum says Bond first drove the model in Goldfinger and identifies the film car’s machine guns, tire slashers, oil jets, rotating license plate and ejector seat. Those are features of the fictional spy car, not equipment on an ordinary production DB5. The museum describes its displayed 1964 DB5 artifact as being on loan from Mr. M and C Nelson. International Spy Museum: Aston Martin DB5
2. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang — Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968)
Chitty is not merely transportation in a story; the specially created fantasy car is the title character. Its appeal comes from treating a car as a machine that can carry the adventure into the air and across water, as well as along a road. Sky HISTORY says the film car took its name from a series of 1920s race cars with large aircraft engines. Dick Van Dyke, who played Caractacus Potts, described the car as having “the turning radius of a battleship.” Sky HISTORY: Top 10 movie cars

3. DeLorean DMC-12 — Back to the Future trilogy
Doc Brown’s DeLorean makes the car itself the engine of the plot: the vehicle is a time machine, and the fictional trigger is 88 mph. Sky HISTORY associates it with the 1985 film, while Hyundai Motor UK identifies the production car as a 1981 De Lorean DMC-12. Its stainless-steel look and the story’s time-travel premise make it recognizable even outside the films. Hyundai Motor UK: “Bond’s Aston Martin voted greatest movie car of all time”
4. Herbie — The Love Bug (1968) and sequels
Herbie is a 1963 Volkswagen Beetle with a personality, not just a distinctive paint job. The films give the car agency in the action, letting it compete, misbehave and respond to people around it. Sky HISTORY recounts that the crew selected the Beetle and that its interior was painted grey to reduce glare on camera. Hyundai’s 2018 poll release described Herbie as having starred in five films at the time of publication.

5. The Batmobile — especially the Tumbler
“The Batmobile” names a succession of screen vehicles, not one fixed model. Hyundai’s list includes the Tumbler associated with Christopher Nolan’s Batman films, as well as the customized Lincoln Futura from the 1960s television series and Tim Burton’s Batmobile. Sky HISTORY describes the 1989 design as having working gadgets and says its roof had to be adjusted to accommodate Batman’s cowl. Those details belong to that design; they should not be transferred to the Tumbler or other Batmobiles. Sky HISTORY: Top 10 movie cars
6. Lotus Esprit S1 — The Spy Who Loved Me (1977)
The Esprit’s defining screen moment is its transformation into a submarine. That switch takes the Bond-car formula beyond gadgets bolted onto a road vehicle: the film turns the car into a means of escape beneath the water. The underwater capability is fictional, not a feature of the production Lotus Esprit S1. Carwow: Best movie cars

7. Ecto-1 — Ghostbusters (1984)
Ecto-1’s long emergency-vehicle silhouette, roof lights and ghost-hunting equipment make it a rolling sign for the team before the Ghostbusters arrive. Hyundai identifies it as a 1959 Cadillac Miller-Meteor; Sky HISTORY calls it a modified 1959 Cadillac and says it was originally black before being changed to improve nighttime visibility. Its visual identity is the combination of the distinctive vehicle and the gear carried on it.
8. Mini Cooper S — The Italian Job (1969)
Three Minis turn the heist’s getaway into a choreographed set piece. Sky HISTORY highlights their escape through a sewer pipe and the red-white-blue order of the cars. Hyundai identifies the getaway vehicles as 1968 Austin Mk I Mini Cooper S cars. Their compact size is more than a visual flourish: it is what makes the film’s narrow, improbable route work.

9. Ford Mustang GT Fastback — Bullitt (1968)
Frank Bullitt’s Mustang is inseparable from the film’s celebrated chase through San Francisco. The sources use slightly different trim descriptions: Sky HISTORY calls it a Mustang 390 GT, while Hyundai’s list labels it a Ford Mustang GT Fastback. Sky HISTORY also says Steve McQueen wanted audiences to see him performing his own stunts. The car’s star power rests on how closely it is linked to the chase, rather than on a single agreed trim label.
10. Ford Thunderbird Convertible — Thelma & Louise (1991)
The green 1966 Thunderbird carries the protagonists through the film and becomes inseparable from its final image. Sky HISTORY identifies it as the women’s car and reads its final role as a fatal escape; Hyundai independently lists Louise’s car as a 1966 Ford Thunderbird. Here the car’s meaning comes from its place in the story, not from gadgets or a chase.

What the rankings can—and cannot—tell you
Different lists make different selections, so this ten-car lineup is best read as a set of memorable examples rather than an objective top ten. A Hyundai Motor UK release in 2018 reported results from a OnePoll.com survey of 2,000 UK adults, commissioned to celebrate Hyundai cars appearing in Ant-Man and The Wasp. In that poll, the DB5 ranked first, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang second, the Back to the Future DeLorean third, Herbie fourth and the Dark Knight Tumbler fifth. Those are commissioned survey results from UK adults in 2018—not a worldwide or current audience ranking.
The same release reported that six in ten respondents thought cars were integral to cinema history, around half said cars featured among their fondest movie memories, and 55 percent wanted near misses in an ideal car chase. Respondents said an ideal chase should last an average of four minutes and 23 seconds. These figures describe that survey, not audiences everywhere or at every time.
