Their remarks were opinions on air, not an authoritative legal ruling.
What did The View cohosts say about the Venezuela operation?
The discussion aired January 5, 2026, after the show’s winter hiatus and following the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, according to contemporaneous reports by NewsBusters and Entertainment Weekly.
Sunny Hostin called the operation illegal in her view
Hostin argued that the operation violated international law and that Congress had not declared war. NewsBusters’ transcript excerpt records her conclusion: “And in my view this is completely, completely, 100 percent illegal.” The words “in my view” matter: this was Hostin’s assessment, not a finding by a court or other authority.
Whoopi Goldberg questioned authorization and precedent
Goldberg asked who had authorized the operation and raised concerns about checks and balances and the history of U.S. regime-change efforts. NewsBusters transcribed her asking, “So, while perhaps no one is going to miss a tyrant like Maduro, is this a legal thing?” Her question focused on the legal and institutional basis for the action, rather than simply whether Maduro’s removal was welcome.

Ana Navarro welcomed Maduro’s removal but doubted Trump’s motives
Navarro said she welcomed Maduro’s removal while questioning whether the operation was really undertaken for Venezuelans. Entertainment Weekly, in a report republished by Yahoo, quoted her saying, “I don’t think this is at all about the Venezuelan people.” The report also quoted her saying, “I think this is a lot about Donald Trump’s ego.”
How did the White House respond?
Entertainment Weekly reported that a White House spokesperson defended the operation and criticized the cohosts as “liberal pundits.” The spokesperson told the outlet: “Liberal pundits will flip-flop on anything — even holding criminal drug lords accountable — in order to attack President Trump, but the President will always protect our homeland and put the American people first.” This is the administration’s stated defense, not an independent determination of the operation’s legality.

Do the remarks establish whether the operation was legal?
No. The reports document statements made during the broadcast and the White House’s response; they do not establish a court’s or other authoritative body’s legal determination. Hostin’s argument invoked international law and Congress’s role, while Goldberg questioned authorization and executive checks. Those are reported arguments, not a legal ruling resolving the operation’s status.
The available quotations come from contemporaneous secondary coverage. NewsBusters reproduces transcript excerpts, and Entertainment Weekly reports Navarro’s remarks and the White House response. Neither report establishes an ABC-owned full transcript or original video. Accordingly, the quoted lines should be read as attributed excerpts from those reports, not as a complete record of the segment.
