Hiccup’s bond with Toothless and the central story beats remain, while selected scenes, character details, creature design and filmmaking methods change. Here are ten notable differences, with story changes separated from production choices.
Story and character changes
1. Berk is shown as a more culturally diverse community
The live-action film presents Berk’s villagers as a more visibly multicultural mix. It also changes the emphasis of Stoick’s rally: rather than centering the speech on the threat posed by Hiccup, he appeals to the warriors’ shared legacy. This is a change in presentation and rhetoric, not a different overall conflict. The comparison source
2. The Dragon’s Nest assault is visible
In the 2010 film, the failed assault on the Dragon’s Nest takes place beyond the fog; viewers hear the violence and see fire, but not the battle itself. The remake shows Stoick and his crew fighting dragons aboard their boats. The result makes the scale and danger of the expedition more immediate on screen. The comparison source
3. Hiccup’s fish-sharing lesson with smaller dragons is omitted
The animated film includes a scene in which Hiccup shares fish with smaller dragons and observes how they ignite internal gas. The live-action version leaves out that early encounter, removing an explicit piece of setup for his later tactic against the Dragon Queen. The basic story still reaches its major confrontations, but this particular link between observation and strategy is less directly established. The comparison source

4. Snotlout’s need for approval is clearer
The remake gives Snotlout a more explicit motivation by showing him seeking his father’s approval. In the animated film, he is more simply presented as a braggart eager to impress Astrid and the village. That addition gives his competitiveness a family dimension rather than changing his role in the larger plot. The comparison source
5. The Elder has more screen presence, but no dialogue
The Elder appears more often in the remake’s first two acts, including around the prediction and the Trial of Fire. She remains non-speaking, so the change is greater visibility rather than a new spoken role or a major shift in the story. The comparison source

Design, cast and filmmaking
6. Toothless is redesigned for a photorealistic setting
Toothless is larger in the live-action film, with a smaller head and eyes and more intricate skin texture. Director Dean DeBlois and visual-effects supervisor Christian Manz described design choices intended to make the dragon feel at home in a more photorealistic world without sacrificing his expressive, pet-like personality. Manz said the team was not aiming for a “real dragon” in the Game of Thrones sense. Toothless remains a computer-generated character; the change is how his design is adapted to the film’s visual style. Los Angeles Times
7. Actors had physical dragon stand-ins on set
The production used puppets to give performers something physical to react to while filming. For flight scenes, an animatronic dragon was mounted on a six-axis gimbal; computer animation created the finished dragons seen in the movie. These practical stand-ins are a production-method difference, not an indication that the on-screen dragons are practical creatures throughout. Los Angeles Times

8. Gerard Butler returns as Stoick
Gerard Butler, who voiced Stoick in the animated franchise, plays him on screen in the live-action film. The studio identifies the other listed principal live-action cast—including Mason Thames as Hiccup and Nico Parker as Astrid—as franchise newcomers. The return of Butler is a casting connection between versions, while the central young characters are played by new performers. Universal Pictures Home Entertainment
9. The remake adds immersive action and expanded mythology while keeping the original’s beats
DeBlois, who directed the 2010 animated film and the remake, has described the new version as following the original story beats while adding “new depths and expanded mythology” and more immersive action and flying. That is the director’s stated approach, not evidence of a wholesale plot overhaul. The remake’s most notable narrative changes are selective additions, omissions and shifts in emphasis within a familiar framework. Los Angeles Times Directors Guild of America

Home release and extras
10. The home release includes more than 75 minutes of bonus material
Universal lists the 2025 film at 2 hours 5 minutes and announced more than 75 minutes of bonus content for its home release, including deleted scenes, a gag reel and making-of segments. The announced Blu-ray and 4K UHD street date was August 12, 2025. The available information does not establish a runtime comparison with a specific edition of the 2010 film, so the runtime alone should not be treated as evidence that the remake is longer or shorter. Universal Pictures Home Entertainment
What the differences add up to
The remake preserves the core Hiccup-and-Toothless story and much of the animated film’s pacing. Its changes are concentrated in selected scenes and motivations, a more visible Berk, a redesigned digital Toothless and live-action production choices. It is best understood as a close retelling that seeks to sit alongside the 2010 film, rather than replace it. Los Angeles Times
