Some of the most memorable screen pumpkins are not pumpkins in the usual sense: one becomes a coach, one is an unseen Halloween legend, one is a pumpkin-headed character, and one is a skeleton with the title “Pumpkin King.” These five picks span those different kinds of pumpkin fame. The order is an editorial judgment about recognizability and story impact, not a measured popularity ranking; available official sources do not establish an objective top ten.
1. The Great Pumpkin — It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown
The Great Pumpkin is a legendary presence in the Peanuts Halloween tradition, but the important point is that Linus waits for it. The official Peanuts character profile says, “Every Halloween, Linus can be found in the pumpkin patch, awaiting the arrival of the Great Pumpkin.” That is descriptive profile copy, not dialogue from the special.
The figure’s absence is part of its power: Linus’s steadfast belief gives the story both its joke and its emotional center. The profile establishes his expectation, not that the Great Pumpkin appears onscreen.
2. Cinderella’s pumpkin coach — Cinderella (1950)
This is the shortlist’s clearest literal pumpkin. The Fairy Godmother transforms a pumpkin into a coach, creating the means for Cinderella to reach the ball. Disney’s film page identifies the transformation as one of the movie’s signature images, while D23 discusses the coach’s design inspiration in its behind-the-scenes feature.

3. Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King — The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
Jack Skellington is a skeleton, not a pumpkin. “Pumpkin King” is his title and role in Halloween Town. Disney describes him as tiring of the usual scares and screams and trying to take on Christmas in its official film overview.

4. Jack Pumpkinhead — Return to Oz (1985)

Return to Oz was released on June 21, 1985. The two Jacks make a useful distinction: one is a pumpkin-themed title-holder; the other is a pumpkin-headed character.
5. Halloweentown — Halloweentown (1998)
Halloweentown belongs on a broader list of pumpkin-associated screen worlds, rather than as a particular famous pumpkin character. Disney’s official synopsis describes Marnie’s arrival in a magical community inhabited by supernatural beings. It does not identify a named pumpkin character or establish pumpkin-headed residents as a distinct character.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What makes these screen pumpkins different?
| Entry | What the pumpkin connection is | Story role | Screen presence |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Great Pumpkin | Legendary figure | Linus’s belief drives the special’s central joke and emotional tension | Linus awaits it; the cited profile does not establish an onscreen appearance |
| Cinderella’s pumpkin | Object transformed into a coach | Enables Cinderella’s trip to the ball | Shown as part of the transformation sequence |
| Jack Skellington | “Pumpkin King” title; skeleton character | His attempt to take on Christmas drives the story | Onscreen character |
| Jack Pumpkinhead | Pumpkin-headed character | One of Dorothy’s companions | Onscreen character |
| Halloweentown | Halloween-themed setting | Magical community frames Marnie’s arrival | Setting-level example; cited synopsis names no pumpkin character |
The examples are not interchangeable: a transformation, an expected visitor, a character design, a title, and a setting each use pumpkin imagery differently. That range is why a short, well-supported list is more useful than stretching the subject to ten with tenuous associations.
