The reported changes are chiefly about compression: the film moves the romance faster, reduces some supporting-character material, shifts the staging of a major conflict and condenses the ending.
Spoilers ahead: The comparisons below discuss relationship developments, the Lionel conflict and the ending. Specific scene differences are reported by secondary comparison articles; Netflix’s official pages establish the shared premise and film details, but do not provide a scene-by-scene adaptation account.
What stays the same in the book and movie?
Both versions center on Nica and Rigel, who grow up at the Grave orphanage and are later adopted by the Milligans. Their relationship develops within a new family arrangement and against the painful experiences they carry from the orphanage. The Grave’s legend of the Tearsmith—a mysterious figure associated with people’s fears and anxieties—gives the story its dark-fable atmosphere.
Netflix identifies Erin Doom’s novel as the source for the Italian film, directed by Alessandro Genovesi and written by Genovesi and Eleonora Fiorini. The film stars Caterina Ferioli as Nica, Simone Baldasseroni as Rigel and Sabrina Paravicini as Miss Margaret. Netflix lists it as a 2024 romance with a 1-hour-45-minute runtime and a TV-MA rating on its title page; availability and language options can vary by territory. See Netflix’s title page.

What changes when the story moves to the screen?
The specific contrasts below come from secondary entertainment comparisons, rather than official production notes. They point to familiar feature-film trade-offs: fewer supporting strands and less time for relationships and aftermath to unfold.

Margaret’s role at the Grave
In the film, Miss Margaret remains in charge of the Grave when Nica and Rigel leave for adoption. Secondary comparisons report that the novel replaces Margaret Stoker with Mrs. Fridge when Nica is 12. That changes who oversees the orphanage during the book’s later events; Netflix’s synopsis confirms Margaret’s place in the film’s premise, while the book-side distinction is reported by comparison coverage. Netflix Tudum’s film coverage and the People comparison republished by Yahoo.
Nica and Rigel’s romance develops faster onscreen
A comparison of the two versions describes the novel as taking longer to build romantic tension. It points to a fever scene in which Nica sees Rigel’s vulnerability while he is unconscious; in the film, that moment is also reported to mark an earlier physical turn in their relationship. The difference is one of pacing, not a change to the central pairing. See the reported comparison.

The Lionel conflict moves to a different setting
Secondary comparisons say the novel’s chaotic confrontation takes place around Lionel’s party, while the film shifts the climax to a school dance. The accounts also describe changes to who is sober and who tries to protect Nica. The scene’s function remains tied to the danger surrounding Nica, but its setting and circumstances differ. People’s comparison, republished by Yahoo, and The Review Geek’s comparison.
Asia and connected supporting stories get less room
The film does not remove Asia, but it reportedly gives her less screen time and trims material around her relationship with Alan and her connection to the Milligans. Those reductions narrow the supporting cast’s storylines compared with the novel. See the People comparison republished by Yahoo and The Review Geek’s comparison.

The novel spends longer on the ending
The reported broad outcome is similar, but the book gives more space to the period when Nica stays beside comatose Rigel and tells him stories over the months before his recovery. The film compresses that stretch of the story. The precise final sequence is not detailed in Netflix’s official synopsis, so this comparison is best understood as a difference in how much time the ending devotes to recovery. People’s comparison republished by Yahoo and The Review Geek’s comparison.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why do the versions feel different?
The reported changes affect more than scene order. The novel has room to extend the buildup between Nica and Rigel, follow Asia’s connected storyline and linger over recovery. The 105-minute film has to concentrate those threads, so it puts greater weight on selected moments and reduces the time spent on secondary arcs and aftermath.

Doom described drawing inspiration from dark fables, constellations, classical music and details that often go unnoticed. She also said adoption was a subject she wanted to bring to readers’ attention, including its circumstances and complexities. On the adaptation, she said she saw the script and visited the set once, but “wasn’t involved in other choices.” That offers context about her exposure to the film without suggesting she directed its adaptation decisions. Netflix Tudum’s interview and film coverage.
Should you read the book after watching the movie?
The novel is the better choice if you want more room for the developing romance, Asia’s supporting storyline and the time Nica spends beside Rigel during his recovery. The film offers the same central pairing and adoption premise in a shorter form, with reported changes to the conflict’s staging and some character material. The English paperback is listed by Penguin Random House as a 576-page Dell edition; formats and listings are on its book page.
