Spoilers for the 2025 film. There is no single killer behind the deaths in The Thursday Murder Club: Bogdan kills Tony Curran, Penny Gray killed Peter Mercer years earlier, and John Gray kills Ian Ventham to keep Mercer’s burial secret. This explanation covers the film adaptation, not the complete ending of Richard Osman’s novel.
Who killed Tony Curran?
Bogdan, Coopers Chase’s groundskeeper, killed co-owner Tony Curran. Bogdan tells Stephen that he confronted Tony about the passport Tony had taken from him. Tony attacked him, and Bogdan says he killed Tony in self-defense. The film does not show the killing directly; viewers learn Bogdan’s account through his confession. Netflix Tudum’s ending explainer gives Bogdan’s account, and TIME’s breakdown also notes that the event is not shown.
What happened to Angela Hughes and Peter Mercer?
The older case is the secret beneath the present-day murders. Penny Gray believed Peter Mercer had killed Angela Hughes and escaped justice. Penny killed Mercer herself, and her husband, John, helped hide his remains in the cemetery at Coopers Chase. The film connects the cold case to the retirement community’s current crisis: a development project threatens to expose the grave. Netflix and TIME both describe this link between Penny’s actions, Mercer’s body, and the later killings.
Why did John kill Ian Ventham?
John killed Ian Ventham with a fentanyl injection to prevent the development from uncovering Mercer’s remains and exposing Penny’s crime. Ventham’s death is therefore tied to the old case, rather than being an unrelated murder: John commits another killing to protect his wife and the secret they had kept.

What happens to John, Penny, and the club?
Elizabeth confronts John after the truth comes out. He asks to be left alone with Penny, and the film implies that the couple die together. It does not show their deaths explicitly. Afterward, Joyce inherits Penny’s Thursday Murder Club necklace, marking her formal place in the group, while Joyce’s daughter Joanna buys Coopers Chase. Netflix’s ending explainer recounts these final developments.
Is the ending justice—or a choice to show mercy?
The resolution offers answers, but not a tidy victory for justice. Penny’s killing of Mercer went undiscovered for years; John then kills Ventham to shield her. The club chooses to give John time alone with Penny rather than immediately deny him that request. The film leaves viewers with the uneasy gap between solving a crime and deciding what justice should look like when the people involved are also loved ones.

That tension suits the story’s emphasis on why a mystery matters to its audience. As Netflix quotes Richard Osman: “To me, whodunits are never about what happens, they’re about why do I care what happens?”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How does the film ending relate to the book?
The 2025 film is an adaptation of Osman’s novel, but the plot account above is specifically the film’s resolution. The publisher’s sample of Richard Osman’s The Thursday Murder Club offers only a limited portion of the book, not a complete account of its ending, so it should not be used to treat every film plot point as the novel’s conclusion. The novel’s central setup is four retirees—an ex-spy, ex-psychiatrist, ex-nurse, and ex-trade-union leader—who meet weekly to discuss unsolved cases. Penguin says Osman was inspired by a real retirement village he visited; he described it as “very moving” and “very beautiful” in a publisher interview.
