WWE published the list on November 30, 2012; it is an editorial ranking, not a current fan poll or an objective, universal consensus.
The ranking below follows WWE’s list, which weighs stakes, signature spectacle, match format, and place in TLC history without claiming those qualities can be measured on a single scale. ESPN’s 2017 retrospective offers another editorial perspective, but it ranks notable TLC moments rather than establishing a definitive all-time match order: ESPN’s TLC retrospective.
WWE’s 10 best TLC matches, ranked
-
Edge & Christian vs. The Dudley Boyz vs. The Hardyz — WrestleMania X-Seven (2001)
The second TLC match, contested for the tag team titles, tops WWE’s ranking. Its defining moment came when Jeff Hardy hung from a ladder and Edge launched a mid-air spear at him. WWE’s retrospective reports the WrestleMania X-Seven crowd as nearly 68,000; that is WWE’s approximate figure from 2010, not an independently verified count here. Edge & Christian ultimately regained the titles. WWE describes the match as widely regarded by the WWE Universe as the best ever—WWE’s characterization, not a universal verdict. WWE’s retrospective on the spear.
-
Edge vs. The Undertaker — One Night Stand 2008
The vacant World Heavyweight Championship was at stake, and Undertaker had to leave WWE if he lost. Outside interference aided Edge, who tipped the ladder while Undertaker was on it, sending him crashing through tables before Edge claimed the title. The career stipulation made the title match carry consequences beyond a championship change.

Edge & Christian vs. The Dudley Boyz vs. The Hardyz — SummerSlam 2000
WWE identifies this tag-team contest for the World Tag Team Championship as the inaugural TLC match. The teams brought distinct signatures to the format: the Hardys were associated with ladders, the Dudleys with tables, and Edge & Christian with the Con-Chair-To. Edge & Christian retained the titles. Its historical role as the original helps explain why it remains a key entry even though WWE ranks the WrestleMania X-Seven rematch higher.
-
John Cena vs. Edge — Unforgiven 2006
WWE frames this WWE Championship match as the culmination of a year-long rivalry. Cena’s Attitude Adjustment from a ladder through two stacked tables was the signature sequence, and he won the championship.

-

How the TLC format grew beyond its first match
WWE dates the first TLC match to SummerSlam 2000 and describes the format as originally designed for tag-team competition. The ten entries show how far it later stretched: singles title matches, a Fatal 4-Way, a six-man tag, and WeeLC’s miniature setup all appear alongside multi-team tag contests. WWE summarized that evolution in its November 30, 2012 article, “The 10 best TLC Matches in WWE history”: “Originally designed for tag team competition, the TLC Match has since evolved with World Titles at stake and variations to include Triple Threat and Fatal 4-Way contests.”
Why this is WWE’s ranking, not a universal answer
“Best” depends on what a viewer values: title or career stakes, originality, a rivalry’s payoff, a memorable visual moment, or the match’s tone. WWE’s 2012 list is a useful historical guide to its own editorial choices, while ESPN’s later look at TLC moments demonstrates that retrospective selection can differ by outlet. Neither source establishes a measurable consensus on the greatest TLC match.
