Spoilers for The Roses (2025). Theo and Ivy reconcile during the final confrontation, but a gas leak turns their damaged home into a fire trap. The film strongly implies they may die, then cuts away without confirming their fate. Director Jay Roach has said the open ending is intentional.
What happens to Theo and Ivy at the end of The Roses?
Their fight finally gives way to an admission of love: Theo tells Ivy he still loves her, and she asks whether he meant it. They reconcile, but the moment comes after their feud has already put them in danger.
During the confrontation, Ivy’s raspberry allergy becomes part of the chaos, she threatens Theo with a gun, and the fight damages her Julia Child stove. Gas escapes from the broken stove. Theo then tells the house system to start a fire, unaware of the leak. The gas ignites and the house catches fire.
The film cuts away without showing whether either of them gets out. Jay Roach said he liked that the ending leaves room for discussion, so the most precise reading is that the fire strongly suggests a fatal outcome but does not confirm one on screen. ComingSoon’s report on Roach’s explanation addresses the ambiguity directly. A scene-by-scene account at PlotExplained states that both die; that is a more definite conclusion than the director’s reported description supports.

Why does the ending leave their fate uncertain?
The film gives viewers the fire, the reconciliation and the cutaway, but no aftermath that settles what happened to the couple. Roach’s reported comment that he welcomes discussion reinforces that this uncertainty is deliberate rather than a hidden confirmation that they survived or died.
The children’s later lives are also not shown. Roach reportedly thought they would be fine, while screenwriter Tony McNamara joked that if their parents died, an insurance policy would leave the children well-off. That is a joke about a possible consequence, not confirmation of the children’s future or their parents’ fate. ComingSoon reports both comments.

What the ending means
The reconciliation is emotionally real, but the timing makes it painful: Theo and Ivy acknowledge their love only after their resentment has helped create an immediate physical catastrophe. The fire turns the possibility of making peace into a question of whether they waited too long.
That irony fits the film’s portrayal of a relationship strained by pride, competition and failures to care for each other. It is an interpretation of the ending, not a confirmed statement of the filmmakers’ intended meaning. The ending is neither a straightforward happy resolution nor an explicit death scene: the couple reconnect, the house burns, and their survival remains unknown.

Searchlight Pictures’ official synopsis frames the conflict around a reversal in the couple’s careers: Theo’s career nosedives as Ivy’s ambitions take off, stirring competition and hidden resentment. Ivy is a chef whose restaurant succeeds; Theo is an architect whose maritime museum project goes badly. As Ivy expands her business, Theo becomes the stay-at-home parent.
In an ABC News Australia interview, screenwriter Tony McNamara said he wanted both characters to be ambitious and described Theo’s ego as the architect of his own problem. Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Theo, pointed to missed opportunities and misunderstandings that keep the couple from looking out for one another. Together, those details make their collapse more than a simple story of one partner’s success or a sudden loss of love: ambition and altered domestic roles expose resentment that the couple has not dealt with.

How the 2025 film relates to The War of the Roses
The Roses reimagines the 1989 film The War of the Roses, itself based on Warren Adler’s novel. Olivia Colman described the earlier film as a jumping-off point, saying this version is very different apart from the occasional homage, such as the falling chandelier. The 2025 story gives particular attention to Ivy and Theo’s changing careers and roles at home. ABC News Australia reports Colman’s comments; Searchlight’s film page identifies the adaptation relationship.
