Spoilers for The Recruit Season 2, Episode 6. Owen gets Jang Kyun and Nan Hee out of Russian custody, then offers Jang Kyun a chance to start over in America in exchange for the intelligence secrets he knows. Their final handshake signals an alliance—and the possibility of real friendship—but it does not erase the deal’s risks or free Owen from intelligence work.
What happens in the Season 2 finale?
The six-episode season ends in Vladivostok, Russia, where Jang Kyun’s pregnant wife, Nan Hee, is being held. Owen’s plan becomes a desperate extraction: he has to get both Jang Kyun and Nan Hee out of Russian intelligence custody. The group ultimately escapes aboard a U.S. Navy submarine. Netflix Tudum’s finale explainer describes the escape and Nan Hee’s fate.

The rescue unfolds amid a threat from Owen’s own agency. CIA Director West authorizes Dawn to kill Owen and Jang Kyun rather than risk their capture exposing agency secrets. Nichka disrupts Dawn’s attempt, but her intervention is not proof that she has become a dependable ally: she has been pursuing her own interests and has already tried to sell Owen to Russian intelligence. Dawn dies in the fight with Nichka. TIME’s episode recap also covers the confrontation.
Getting out of Russia resolves the immediate danger, not Owen’s standing with the CIA. He does not know every way his own agency has moved against him, and the finale does not show him leaving intelligence work.

What does Owen’s offer to Jang Kyun mean?
Once they are safe, Owen lays out two paths: Jang Kyun can return to Korea and face a treason trial, or he can try to begin again in America with Nan Hee. The second path comes with a condition: Jang Kyun must share the secrets he holds. Netflix Tudum characterizes the proposal as safe harbor in exchange for secrets; Teo Yoo, who plays Jang Kyun, sees it as a possible fresh start.
That makes the offer both humane and strategic. Owen is offering protection and a future beyond imprisonment, but he is also using leverage to secure valuable intelligence. Jang Kyun accepts with the final handshake; the scene does not establish every practical detail of resettlement or what any CIA arrangement would involve. Yoo describes the possibility as “a hint from Owen that there’s a fresh start in the cards for Jang Kyun.” Netflix Tudum’s explanation and cast comments support that reading.

Why is the ending called the beginning of a friendship?
Owen and Jang Kyun do not begin as natural friends: their goals collide, and each has reasons to distrust the other. Over the season, they come to recognize what drives the other and show vulnerability. In a Netflix Tudum interview, Noah Centineo and Yoo describe their bond in terms of brotherhood and shared values. Centineo calls the final exchange “a true moment of camaraderie and friendship, which he hasn’t had in a while.”
The handshake is therefore more than a business agreement, but it is not a promise of a settled, uncomplicated friendship. It marks the start of trust between two men whose connection is bound up with danger and an exchange of secrets.

Does Owen leave the CIA?
No. The finale offers no clean break from the intelligence world. Creator and showrunner Alexi Hawley says, “The ending means he’s not going to get out.” Centineo describes the final scene as a moment of calm and triumph, but that pause does not mean Owen has escaped the compromises or violence of his work. Netflix Tudum’s ending explainer includes both perspectives.
