Brendan Fraser says the forthcoming Mummy film is the installment he had wanted to make—and that he waited 20 years for the opportunity. Fraser and Rachel Weisz are reported to return, with filming reported underway and an October 15, 2027 release date. The plot has not been disclosed.

In a November 2025 interview with The Associated Press, Fraser described the forthcoming movie as the one he had wanted to make. “The one I wanted to make was never made,” he said, adding, “And I’ve been waiting 20 years for this call.”

His comments were not a dismissal of The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, the 2008 third film. Fraser called it a good standalone movie and said he was proud of it. He also said of the new installment: “Now? It’s time to give the fans what they want.”
Who is reported to be returning?
Fraser and Weisz are reported to reprise their roles as Rick and Evelyn O’Connell. Weisz did not appear in the 2008 third film, according to Variety’s franchise summary.

Later reporting also names John Hannah, Oded Fehr, and Kevin J. O’Connor among the returning cast. LOS40 attributes Fehr and O’Connor’s casting to Deadline; these names should be understood as reported casting, rather than treating every role as established by a primary studio announcement. The available reporting does not establish that other familiar characters will return.
When does The Mummy 4 come out?
The latest dated release report in the coverage reviewed is LOS40’s September 15, 2026 article, which says filming had begun and gives an October 15, 2027 release date. That is a reported date, not one independently verified here through a Universal announcement.

Earlier 2026 reports gave May 19, 2028. That date has been superseded by the later October 2027 report and should not be treated as the current schedule.
What is the plot, and what have the directors said?
No plot synopsis or specific continuity details have been disclosed in the reporting reviewed. That means there is not yet a supported answer about the story, its setting, or how it handles events from earlier films.

In a February 2026 interview with TheWrap, directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett said their conversations with Fraser and Weisz about the script and approach had been positive. Gillett described the script’s energy as reminiscent of the first film and called it romantic, scary, risky, and swashbuckling. Bettinelli-Olpin said the goal was to evolve something they loved rather than make it “just nostalgia.” Those are the directors’ descriptions of their intentions, not a synopsis or a guarantee of what will appear in the finished film.

The cast and schedule are developing news, so the wording matters: Fraser’s comments are direct quotations from AP, while the release date and some additional cast names come from entertainment reporting. Without a primary studio announcement in the reviewed coverage, it is more accurate to call those details reported than official.
