The Order is a tense historical crime thriller about the FBI’s pursuit of a real white supremacist group in 1980s America. Jude Law gives its fictional lead, agent Terry Husk, a worn, obsessive edge; Nicholas Hoult makes group leader Robert Jay Mathews a disturbing opponent. The film’s answer to “Who wins?” is less interesting than the human cost of the pursuit—and the fact that the FBI heroes on screen are not literal historical figures.

Is The Order based on a true story?

Yes, but it is a dramatization, not a verbatim account of one FBI agent’s case. Justin Kurzel’s 2024 film draws on real crimes by the Order, a white supremacist group led by Robert Jay Mathews, and adapts Kevin Flynn and Gary Gerhardt’s 1989 nonfiction book The Silent Brotherhood: Inside America’s Racist Underground. The Los Angeles Times connects the group to robberies and the 1984 murder of Denver talk-radio host Alan Berg. Los Angeles Times

The distinction matters: Terry Husk, Jamie Bowen and Joanne Carney, the FBI protagonists named in the film, are fictional characters, according to the Washington Post. Their actions should not be read as a record of what one specific real agent did. The Washington Post

For the nonfiction account behind the adaptation, look for Flynn and Gerhardt’s The Silent Brotherhood. The reporting verifies the book’s connection to the film, but does not establish current editions or availability.

What happens in the film?

Set in 1983, The Order begins with a pattern of robberies, counterfeiting and armored-car heists in the Pacific Northwest. Husk, working in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, suspects the crimes are not simply a run of financial offenses: they are funding domestic terrorism. The Venice Biennale lists the film as a 116-minute, English-language production directed by Kurzel and written by Zach Baylin. La Biennale di Venezia

AGC Studios’ synopsis describes the gang as seeking money for an armed uprising and says it amassed a war chest of “over $4 million.” That figure is the studio’s promotional description, not an independently verified historical accounting. AGC Studios

Who were Robert Jay Mathews and the Order?

Mathews led the real group, which used armed robberies to finance plans to overthrow the government, according to the Associated Press. The manhunt culminated in a standoff on Whidbey Island. AP reports that it lasted more than 30 hours and ended on December 8, 1984. Associated Press

The film turns that history into a pursuit thriller: investigation, escalating danger and action carry the story toward its confrontation. Knowing the broad historical outcome may shape the suspense, but the film’s central tension comes from watching the investigators close in on a violent movement—and from seeing the distance between a historical record and the invented characters used to dramatize it.

Does Jude Law or Nicholas Hoult give the stronger performance?

Law anchors the film as Husk, an investigator whose weariness and fixation keep the procedural story personal. Hoult’s Mathews is the unnerving counterweight: controlled enough to be dangerous, rather than a cartoon villain. The Washington Post described the film as gripping and finely acted, while the Guardian praised its effectiveness as both docudrama and detective thriller, especially in its action sequences. The Washington Post The Guardian

Tye Sheridan, Jurnee Smollett and Marc Maron are also among the principal cast listed by the Venice Biennale. The film’s strongest dramatic choice is to put Law’s fictional, compromised investigator opposite Hoult’s real historical antagonist; that contrast gives the manhunt a human center without claiming the FBI characters are documentary fact.

Does the film’s political relevance work?

The present-day resonance is part of the film’s design, not a claim that the 1980s events predict the future. Kurzel told the Associated Press: “Even though it’s a period film, it’s so incredibly present and sort of dangerously still relevant.” Reviewers likewise emphasized the unsettling connection between the historical story and contemporary extremist politics. That framing gives the thriller weight, though its force depends on viewers seeing the parallel as an interpretation rather than a substitute for the specific history.

Is The Order worth watching?

For viewers who want a serious crime thriller grounded in extremist history, yes. The performances, procedural momentum and action make the pursuit compelling, while the film’s political aftertaste stops it from feeling like a routine manhunt. Its key qualification is also a useful one: watch it as a dramatized adaptation of real events, not as a documentary or a literal account of a named FBI agent’s case.
