Spoilers for Robert Eggers’s 2019 film The Lighthouse. Winslow’s final ascent and the image of his body on the rocks most strongly evoke the myth of Prometheus: a mortal reaches for forbidden light and is punished. But the film leaves open whether the light is supernatural, a projection of Winslow’s unraveling mind, or both. That uncertainty is part of the ending, not a puzzle with one confirmed solution.
What happens at the end of The Lighthouse?
Veteran keeper Thomas Wake (Willem Dafoe) and newcomer Ephraim Winslow (Robert Pattinson) are stranded together at a remote New England lighthouse in the 1890s. Their work and antagonism intensify as isolation closes in. Wake keeps the beacon’s light to himself, and Winslow becomes increasingly fixated on seeing it.

At the climax, Winslow reaches the lantern room and looks into the light. The film does not give viewers a stable, objective account of what he sees. He falls down the tower; the closing image shows him sprawled on the rocks while gulls feed on him. The ending gives a stark consequence, but not a definitive explanation for the vision or the fall.
Why does the ending suggest Prometheus?
In Greek myth, Prometheus steals fire from the gods and is punished: an eagle repeatedly eats his liver. Winslow’s forbidden ascent toward the lighthouse’s brilliant light, followed by his exposed body and the birds, makes the final tableau resemble that story. The light can therefore be read as divine fire or knowledge—something powerful that Wake guards and Winslow transgresses to claim.

- The story of two lighthouse keepers on a remote and mysterious New England island in the 1890s.
This is more than a resemblance viewers have invented. In a 2019 BAFTA Screenwriters’ Lecture, director and co-writer Robert Eggers said he and his brother researched Prometheus, Proteus, Triton, and Neptune to amplify mythic elements in a later draft. That supports reading the ending through mythology, but it does not prove that Wake is literally a god or that the film is a direct retelling of Prometheus. BAFTA’s account of Eggers’s lecture.
Is Winslow hallucinating, or is the light supernatural?
The film supports a psychological reading without confirming that every strange image is a hallucination. Isolation, antagonism, alcohol, fear, and Winslow’s guilt all contribute to the keepers’ deteriorating grasp on events. The Directors Guild of America describes the men as struggling to maintain their sanity as isolation and alcohol wear them down, while nightmares threaten them. That context makes it plausible that the vision reflects Winslow’s destabilized perception; it does not settle what the light is.

A supernatural reading remains possible. The story’s development deliberately took mythic and uncanny turns: Eggers told BAFTA that it began with a plot idea drawn from the Smalls Lighthouse tragedy in Wales, then acquired elements including a mermaid, a mystery in the light, a foghorn, and references to sea deities. A24’s production notes likewise describe the story’s movement from historical inspiration into supernatural and mythological territory.
| Reading | What it explains | What it leaves open |
|---|---|---|
| Psychological and guilt-focused | The keepers’ worsening behavior and Winslow’s unstable point of view, in a story shaped by isolation and alcohol. | Why the film leans so heavily on mythic imagery and supernatural suggestion; it cannot prove that every uncanny event is a hallucination. |
| Mythic and Promethean | The guarded light, Winslow’s forbidden ascent, and his punishment among the birds. | Whether the light is literally divine, whether Wake is a god, and whether Winslow encounters anything supernatural. |
The readings can work together: psychology describes the human crisis the film depicts, while myth gives that crisis an archetypal shape. Eggers told Esquire he wanted the film to remain obscure and ambiguous, and said, “For me, there’s tension in not knowing.” That intention is a reason not to turn one interpretation into a definitive plot answer. What does the lighthouse light represent?
At the level of the story, it is both a workplace beacon and the object of Winslow’s desire. Wake controls access to it; Winslow’s fixation turns the light into a boundary he cannot accept. Reading it as withheld knowledge or power follows from that structure: to reach the light is to cross a line Wake has enforced.
The film’s production choices intensify the sense of confinement, though they do not establish what the light means. A24’s 2019 production notes say the movie was shot in black and white at a 1.19:1 aspect ratio, a nearly square frame. The restricted width can make the keepers’ world feel cramped. The notes also describe Eggers’s research into 1890s New England maritime photographs and his visit to Point Cabrillo to study a Fresnel lens. Eggers said the swirling light patterns on Pattinson’s face are real effects of looking into a Fresnel lens—not proof that Winslow sees a particular supernatural entity. A24’s production notes.

Does the film have one confirmed explanation?
No single supernatural or psychological mechanism is confirmed. Eggers’s comments establish that ambiguity and mythic influence were intentional; they do not certify a one-to-one allegory or explain every image. The most grounded interpretation keeps both levels in view: Winslow’s isolation and guilt make his perception unreliable, and the Prometheus pattern makes his pursuit of the light feel like a transgression with mythic consequences.
