This is an editorial ranking, not an official One Piece list: the order weighs emotional impact, Nami’s agency, her relationships with the Straw Hats, and her dream of making a map of the world. Spoilers follow for Nami’s pre-timeskip story, especially Arlong Park.
10. Nami’s navigation makes her indispensable
Long before the crew reaches the Grand Line, Nami’s skill with maps and navigation sets her apart. She is not merely the person who keeps the ship on course: charting the world is her own dream. Bandai Namco describes her as the Straw Hat Crew’s navigator and identifies drawing a map of the world as her ambition (Bandai Namco).
9. She steals a map of the Grand Line
Nami’s early dealings with the Straw Hats show a resourceful survivor who has her own agenda. Her theft is not simple mischief or greed; the Arlong story later reveals how much her choices are shaped by a desperate effort to free her home. That context makes her guardedness read differently on a second look.
8. Her connection to Arlong comes into view
The reveal that Nami is tied to Arlong sharply changes how the crew—and the audience—can interpret her apparent alliance with them. She has been navigating a coercive arrangement, not freely choosing the side that profits from her skill. Her secrecy is a survival strategy, even as it puts distance between her and the people who might help.

7. Nami returns to Coco Village
Back in her home village, Nami’s private bargain becomes inseparable from the people she is trying to protect. Her work as a cartographer has been bound to Arlong’s control, while her efforts to gather money are aimed at buying Coco Village’s freedom. The return makes clear that her apparent self-interest has always carried a terrible cost.
6. She keeps trying to buy the village’s freedom
Nami’s long effort to save Coco Village is one of the clearest demonstrations of her determination. She takes on the burden alone and keeps working toward a deal, even though the arrangement forces her to serve the person exploiting her home. The point is not that she has found a fair solution; it is that she is trying to protect others with the limited power she has.

5. Arlong’s betrayal destroys her plan
When Arlong’s side confiscates the money Nami has gathered, the bargain collapses. The loss is more than a financial setback: it wipes out the future she has been struggling to secure for Coco Village. That betrayal brings her isolation and helplessness to the surface, and leaves her with no workable way to save the village by herself.
4. Nami asks Luffy for help at Arlong Park
Nami finally turns to Luffy and asks for help. It is the emotional reversal at the heart of Arlong Park: the person who has spent so long trying to carry everything alone entrusts someone else with her pain. Netflix’s live-action character summary likewise describes Arlong’s betrayal as the turning point that leads Nami to turn to Luffy (Netflix Tudum).

3. Luffy gives her his straw hat
Luffy’s response is an act of trust rather than a demand for explanation. Giving Nami his straw hat makes his support tangible, and the Straw Hats’ decision to stand with her answers the appeal she has just made. The gesture matters because Nami is no longer facing Arlong’s power alone.
2. The Straw Hats set out against Arlong
The crew’s decision to confront Arlong turns Nami’s request into action. Luffy and the others take on the danger that she could not overcome by herself, and their intervention ultimately frees Coco Village. Her appeal changes the crew’s course—and confirms that she has become someone they choose to protect.

1. Nami leaves Coco Village with the crew
After the village is freed, Nami can leave with the Straw Hats not as Arlong’s coerced cartographer or a thief working alone, but as their navigator and a friend pursuing her own future. The departure gives her arc its clearest resolution: navigation and mapmaking remain central to who she is, but her dream no longer has to serve her captor’s plans. Bandai Namco’s character description similarly connects her role as navigator with her world-map ambition (Bandai Namco).

Arlong Park brings Nami’s defining qualities together: skill, resourcefulness, endurance, and the ability to trust others after betrayal. Netflix actor Emily Rudd, speaking about her portrayal in the live-action adaptation, said, “Nami has spent her entire life learning how to navigate, partially because she loves it but also because she was forced to do it” (Netflix Tudum). That is commentary on the adaptation’s character portrayal, not a statement by Eiichiro Oda about manga canon.
