The Devil’s Hour Season 2 is an ambitious, five-episode mystery thriller that rewards viewers who enjoy piecing together a story rather than being handed its rules. Jessica Raine and Peter Capaldi anchor its uneasy alliance with strong central performances, while the shifting realities and compressed pacing can make the clues feel deliberately elusive. It is a compelling middle chapter, not a sensible place to start: watch Season 1 first, and expect the announced third season to complete the story.

What is Season 2 about?

Premiering on Prime Video on 18 October 2024, the five-part season brings Lucy Chambers and Gideon Shepherd into an uneasy alliance aimed at preventing a recurring tragedy and hunting an elusive monster. Lucy is living a double life; Ravi Dhillon is described in the official synopsis as her past-life husband, while DS Sam Boyd assists his investigation. Isaac, meanwhile, struggles to hold his place in a reality that seems to reject his existence. About Amazon UK’s season announcement gives the broad setup without reducing its mysteries to a simple procedural case.

The premise grows out of the first season’s image of Lucy waking at 3:33 a.m. with terrifying visions. The original series was created and written by Tom Moran and produced by Hartswood Films, according to Amazon’s 2021 announcement. Season 2 carries that uncanny starting point into a larger story about identity, repeated lives and the consequences of what Lucy and Gideon know.

Does the mystery make sense?

The season’s main pleasure is watching apparently disconnected pieces begin to touch: a police investigation, Lucy’s concealed life, Gideon’s knowledge of what may be coming, and Isaac’s precarious existence. The official synopsis and episode descriptions establish those converging strands, but the satisfaction comes from how the show withholds their full meaning and gradually makes the connections legible.

That approach is also the season’s chief barrier. It is not a clean, linear puzzle in which every episode neatly explains the last. Viewers have to tolerate uncertainty about what is happening and how the different realities relate. The revelations make the broad design easier to follow, but the series retains a taste for piling complications into its story. Ben Dowell of The Times captured that tension in his 19 October 2024 review, calling the ambition “breathtaking” while noting that Moran’s script can feel as if it has thrown “just about every TV drama ingredient” into the mix. The ambition is part of the appeal; so is the risk that the machinery occasionally draws attention to itself.

How do the cast and performances hold up?

Jessica Raine gives Lucy the season’s essential point of view: a detective trying to work while her own life becomes increasingly difficult to explain. Peter Capaldi makes Gideon an effective counterweight, a figure whose confidence and intentions invite scrutiny even as his alliance with Lucy becomes necessary. Their uneasy partnership supplies the story with human friction when its premise threatens to become all mechanism.

The supporting cast broadens that tension. Nikesh Patel plays Ravi Dhillon, Saffron Hocking plays Sam Boyd, Benjamin Chivers plays Isaac Chambers, and Phil Dunster plays Mike. The season asks these characters to inhabit a world in which personal history and present circumstance do not always fit comfortably together. Rotten Tomatoes’ displayed critic excerpts also praise the cast: Maggie Boccella of Collider wrote that the cast “stepping up its game” helped improve on the first season’s formula. That is a critic’s assessment, rather than an objective measure of performance.

Does five episodes help or hurt the pacing?

Five episodes give the season a tight frame for escalating danger. The investigation and the larger threat keep moving, and the relatively short run avoids the sense that the central mystery is being stretched across a long season. When the story is moving between Lucy, Gideon and Isaac, however, compression can make a turn feel more like another layer added to the puzzle than a moment allowed to settle.

The season’s pace is best for viewers who like a thriller to keep opening new questions while answering older ones. Those who want frequent pauses to absorb the timeline and character relationships may find it demanding. Lacy Baugher of Paste Magazine, reviewing it on 17 October 2024, described the second outing as more confident and compelling once it was “free of the narrative shackles” that obscured the story’s nature in its first chapter.

Is it a satisfying middle chapter?

Season 2 develops the show’s original visions-and-investigation premise into a wider, reality-bending story, while making Lucy and Gideon’s relationship the engine of its immediate conflict. It is designed as part of a larger arc rather than a self-contained mystery with every thread resolved. Amazon describes Season 3 as the final season, which gives this installment the useful context of a planned endpoint without establishing what that final chapter will contain.

Who should watch it, and where?

This is for viewers who enjoy crime investigations that turn into speculative puzzles, and who are comfortable keeping track of revelations that reframe earlier scenes. It is less suited to anyone seeking a straightforward detective drama or a mystery that explains its rules early. New viewers should begin with Season 1: the 3:33 a.m. visions, Lucy’s circumstances and the later complications depend on that foundation.

Season 2 premiered on Prime Video on 18 October 2024. Streaming availability varies by territory; the platform’s announcement does not establish current access in every country. Rotten Tomatoes displayed an 88% Tomatometer from three critic reviews when accessed on 5 October 2026, alongside 100+ audience ratings. That is a small critic sample and a dated snapshot, not a definitive measure of consensus. Rotten Tomatoes’ Season 2 page lists five episodes, all dated 18 October 2024.
